  1. Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner. Hope you made it through the Tornado safe! The finish is what they call patina green antique finish. It has ammonium chloride in it as well as copper sulfate. After it dried I used my torch and moved it around the rose. I wasn't quit sure how it was going to turn out but I was happy with the results. You can get the solution at a craft store under the name sophisticated finishes.

  2. If you ever want to get into electroplating check out Rio Grande. I bought my electroplating supplies from them. Before you plate steel you would half to pre plate with copper to prevent rusting, then it's plated nickel. Plating stainless is possible but you need a special solution before you can plate it, basically another step. It's really not complicated to electroplate and with a small investment you could be plating, gold, silver, rhodium, copper and nickel.

  3. I thought I would try something creative. My stepson is a manager of a bar 3 BBQ in Bozeman MT. On my visit this last February I thought it would be cool if he had a branding iron for his restaurant to hang on his wall. This is what I came up with. It is 17 inches long, 14 inches tall when the handle is up. The brand itself is 5 1/2 inches in diameter. It's all made with mild steel. 1/4 inch square and 1/8 inch flat 3/4 inch wide. I made it so the handle moves up to brand and down to hang on the wall. It was all formed using my forge and welded with a wire welder. I made rivets from nails for the handle and to join the circle.

  4. I finally had a chance to work with some of the stainless. Heated it to a yellow color, which seemed to heat up quicker than mild. It did work a little harder but I managed to get the job done. When I was tapering the end I did have a problem with the tip splitting. Overall I believe my experience was a good one. Thanks everyone for the great information.

  5. I know some of this is wood but my daughter wanted something to hang a few necklaces and dangle earrings on , so I came up with this idea. I forged hooks out of some old square nails that I found at a old cellar hole. I made a couple larger ones out of 1/4" square stock and I used a 1/4 round for the earring bar across the top. I used some scrap wood to make the frame. She wanted something small and something to hang on the wall.

  6. I would use a combination of copper, brass and steel. You can treat the metals anyway you feel like. Heating the copper and brass with a torch can give it a nice effect. Look on you tube on copper flowers and leaves and see what other people are making. Lot of good ideas!
