  1. with coke you need a large fire to make it efficient effectively a big oven. you want a nice sized pile of coke that isnt burning over the pile that is. containing heat/gases ect, the best forge for coke is a sideblast, although a tuyere blast works fine too, just make sure you have a large table or high sides to mound the coke and make a nice pile or oven, try not to get a hand crank blower as coke needs a lot of air to maintain a good heat and it will also stop burning the second no air is passing through the forge, :) any more questions PM me.
  2. So what would you reccomend I put in the middle of the firepot to stop coke falling through ??
  3. Hi guys i need a complete rundown on a good coke forge, how should i run the forge/manage it while in use, Seeing as the smiths around me dont have much experience at all in running a coke forge any and all help is appreciated. :) So far i have a 3" deep by 12" wide by 13.5" long cast iron fire pot, with a 3" inner diameter tuyere. the table im mounting the fite pot on is a 5mm thick steel plate that is 1000mm by 800mm, How much air is needed and also what kind of preasure, also does anyone have any good ideas for a clinker breaker substitute, Also the coke that im using, im not sure on the quality, can anyone tell me, Fire Pot: Any help is appreciated guys.
  4. DAYUUUMMMM, thats looking mighty fine :)
  5. thats either a champion or buffalo, The modern Blacksmith on youtube has a series on repairing one i cant remember off the top of my head the brand but here are the vids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9gtcHW3KBU
  6. so you think it could be a lack of air volume ?
  7. Hey, i got a problem with a forge that i bought a while back, the fire pot is quite deep about 6" and its difficult to move the center of the fire up to a workable height, it also uses a heap of coke, :( any ideas to improve it, btw the fire pot is full cast iron one with a ducks next and trap and clinker break, i dont have the means to weld iron either, if it really boils down to it ill just fabricate another one with a break drum as the fire pot,
  8. What about a motor like this ?? Look at this on eBay: Electric motor Three-phase 415v 0.25kw 1/3HP 2800rpm shaft 11mm http://bit.ly/TdoP5V
  9. Hey Fellow blacksmiths and farriers alike, I just picked up a old silent 200 blower with the main body missing and the shaft missing, wondering what's the best way to attach motor to it instead, i want a good solid blower for use in my home non portable forge, also, what do you guys think of the resto so far, just sanding back the years of rust and abuse,
  10. What does that mean its made of ? Steel face iron body just iron or just steel
  11. I got the grinder and polishing piece out this morning and gave the whole anvil a good polishing up, especially the side where the 3 0 5 were punched in and have uncovered some markings however I cant make any sense of them, :( thanks guys for your responses :)
  12. the steps are under the horn and heel, yeah, I can make out a 305 on the side of the anvil i assume this is the hundred weights measurement, 305 = 341 pounds as i stated above. p.s i used an industrial scale to measure the weight of the anvil before hand.
  13. Hey guys, I just bought myself a new anvil for $250, the other day and I'm trying to identify and age the anvil. some pics below. Sorry for the bad lighting, took these pictures at night. thanks guys any help is appreciated.
