New workshop
Looks like it is going to be a nice shop. I put all the receptacles 4 ft off floor. I don't like bending over!

Sounds like approaching where the problem is coming from makes more sense and bang for the money so to speak. But then tihis rules applies to most things in life. Thanks for your responses.

Charles when you speak of a wooden pad are you referring to the anvil stand sitting on a wooden pad. If so where is the silicone?

Gas forge
I am considering getting a gas forge. I would appreciate any information/ pro and cons of propane vs natural gas forges? Or any other thoughts you care to share on the subject. I currently have a brick coal forge but that I will be giving up when I move back to town. Ugh!

Building a shop in town
I will be going back to town in about a year and trying to decide how to build my shop so to help contain the noise somewhat so not to xxxx people off right off the bat. I already figure I will give up the coal forge and go to a gas forge . I will have natural gas available. Any input on that will be appreciated. Probably will miss my brick forge. Oh we'll moving on. I will do some things to deaden the anvil ring itself. Anyone have any thoughts on setting the anvil on a sand bed? Not sure about this? But my main concern is the walls. I will be building my house and insulating it with blown in wet cellulose. It dries before drywalling it. It is a great insulation and fairly good at softening sound. I thought I would use 2-6 in the shop and use the same insulation. Then I remembered at work we built 8 inch concrete walls and filled with sand to help contain noise levels. Worked pretty good. Plus no fire concerns. Ay thoughts on this subject would be appreciated.

Hello from central KY
Hello I am located in central Ky. Winchester just east of Lexington. I have been lurking around the site for a while and I was just curious if there are any smiths on this site from Central KY? I guess I should say a little about myself. I just recently retired from my paying job. I have been interested in 18th century muzzleloading rifles and knives since about 1970. I make 18th century rifles , hand forged knives and assorted related items. My job used up most of my time.. I haven't had much time for the last few years to make anything. Now that I am retired I will be getting back into a lot more. I started out making knives by stock removal method but switch over to forging them several years ago. Which I really enjoy a lot more. Anyway just wanted to say hi and was wonding if anyone during forge work was close by.

anvil ID please
Volcano forge After you said it was a Peter Wright I went back out and turned it on its side and got the light just wright and you are correct. I could make it out after knowing what I was looking for. It's my understanding that Peter Wright anvils are ok??? It does have normal wear where you would would expect it, about 3/16 sway. Should I leave it along or consider repairing it.
