  1. G'Day

I'm in the process of building a coal forge at the moment but a little while ago i made a nice little gas forge for small jobs and knife making. Its made out of a 9kg gas bottle and has a removable end to replace the lining if needed and a door for smaller jobs. I got the idea and a lot of info off a friend  and knocked it up in the shed

    Thanks for looking.

  2. Thanks Mate

There was a bit of work on the horn but I’m happy with the result.  I marked the shape i wanted out in two dimensions at the start then the rest was mostly done by eye. I used a French curve now and them to check for uniformity of both sides.

The 36 grit sanding disc in the 5" really finished it off nice and was easy to blend the shape, then i just polished it with a scotchbrite on my radius master when i was done. I would say if you have a good eye and a feel for this sort of thing definitely give it a go.

  3. Thanks everyone.

Its welded together using low hydrogen wire, The ring isn’t too bad tough i only have my Wilkinson to compare it to. That’s why the faces were machined before assembly to increase the contact area of pieces.  As far as the rebound goes i tried it last night with a 1.5lb hammer from 200mm and it bounced back 80-100mm roughly. As i said though at 45rc its on the softer end of the scale for an anvil but i will see how it goes before i modify it.

    G'Day everyone

I have been a member for a while so I thought I should say
hi. I'm from Australia and have had an interest in blacksmithing for years
although I haven't done much about it. I have a background in the metal trades
and engineering and I like the old ways so this is a natural progression for
me. I have been gradually collecting gear for a blacksmith shop at home and I’m
    making stuff as time permits.

Lots of great info here and I hope I can contribute as well

    Thanks

    Darren
