  1. Almost 100% of my smith work is demoing. That's how it goes when you work at a historical site with all kinds of visitors. I sometimes wonder how much I could get done if I didn't have to explain it to everyone who walks through the door.
  2. I was getting all excited about wrought iron for a minute there. I've worked with it in a very limited context (made an s-hook, which turned out pretty well, and two chain links, one of which seems to have walked off on its own), and it is some neat stuff, though harder to work with than 1018 by a long shot. I take it that modern cast iron ain't very different from the old stuff? I've always been tempted to try forging some just to see how it behaves (poorly).
  3. so uhh did you have cameras in my shop a few days ago while I was trying to faggot weld 4 rods together for an s-hook, or is this just coincidence? I agree with you guys about getting the basics down before moving on to complicated projects, but doing up a hammer doesn't really seem that complex, besides the punching and drifting, plus it's gotta be pretty hard to accidentally burn a hammer, given its size. Is the amount of work it will take to move tool steel around the problem? Of course, it is still easier to hit up some antique stores or whathaveyou. (also: hey guys, I am new here!)
