    Chris

My wife and I are friends with Ron and Brenda......the blacksmiths on Surviving the Iron Age. The show was produced by the BBC. If you want a copy of the show you could try getting ahold of the BBC directly (http://www.bbc.co.uk/feedback/). I don't know if it's ever been made available on dvd though. I think we still have it on VHS somewhere as we taped it at the time.
  2. I don't know how many have spotted it. There's been a bit of an update on the OABA site regarding this meeting. There's been an additional post stating that the Mill will have some limited quantity of coke for sale. They're asking 30 cents/lb.......bring your own bags or pails.
Not a bad price really since coal from Thak works out to roughly 43 cents/lb.

  3. Well depending on what you want and what you need you might find some goodies at Wards Farrier supply n rockwood just outside of guelph. they are mostly a Farrier supply but Bob Ward does carry some stuff that is usefull to the Blacksmith.

the only places i am realy familiar with are Professional, Wards and THAK. keeping my eye on this thread, i would love to know if there is as good smith supply in ontario myself.

Rockwood isn't THAT far away from me. I've never heard of Wards. Do you have any contact info for them?
  4. the professional in Orangeville sells really nice firepots anvils and other blacksmithing tools as well as coal. they are mainly a Farrier supply store but do have a pretty good selection of stuff.I priced out one of their Firepots at 290$ Rob Martins (Thak) was around 600$, in ontario it is really worth it to go to the store or phone Professional Farrier Supply

I never made it to Profarriersupply in person, but I did order their catalogue and talked to the folks on the phone. At the time I was looking for a firepot and a few other assorted items listed in the catalogue. They told me that most items like that are USA special order for them and that the prices listed are liable to increase due to the way the dollar is now and the fact that transport fees have increased. That conversation and the fact that they have bankers hours Monday - Friday only, kind of took care of that.
  5. I'm just curious. For some here blacksmithing is a profession. For others, it's a hobby. I was just kind of wondering what else other blacksmiths might pursue as a hobby/pastime.
Myself, I also do a bit of hobby carpentry and I also make homemade wines and meads. Add that to work (and of course blacksmithing) and my other favourite pastime (fishing), and it's a marvel that the wife sees me at all sometimes.

    What do you do?

  6. About time someone else from Southern Ontario made his way here. Welcome aboard! Where are you located?
I would agree that you should make a point of joining OABA.....it's just full of great people just waiting to be met. We just finished having a meeting at Waldie's in Milton back in February.
