  2. Show me your solid fuel forge. Doesn't matter whether it is home made or store bought, coal, coke, charcoal or other solid fuels. Please give us a little information on the construction.

this is 1 i made out of an old water tank, lot of nice looking forges around.post-15904-0-28205000-1303768916_thumb.j

  3. i think you would have a good trade if you reproduced it as a poster i'd buy one, what are its dimentions.(copy right???)

its only a small flyer,i had it blown up and both sides printed then framed,i know this mob arn't in bussiness any more ,copy right no idea, its a long thing and wont fit in my scanner ,cheers ,glen
  4. tom yes the idea was primitive, our forefolk were scottish and this dousn't represent any particular style in scottish history, but will make a claymore 1 day,i agree that some things should be spot on and as you say makers wouldn't let a bad sword out of the shop, seeya mate ,glen

  5. just finished a display board, started it many years ago finaly have the time to finish things, the blade for the sword came out of a gerkin cutting machine ,the shield is a french oak wine barrel lid,and the hawk was an idea that i saw on this great site,1 of my old smithing ball peen hammers,i left hammer marks on both items to give the look of age, great site this 1,

  6. good on you mate your own forge is a great thing ,i went away from the standard anvil height thing because it was giving my crook back a wearing, moved it up and much better for sure ,thing to be aware of though ,raising the anvil brings the hammer closer to your head , i always work with my head slanted to the left ,any miss struck blows will go past ,have had hammers past the head in an instant ,just a thought ,take care ;)

  7. gday mate ,built a flintlock rifle based on what was called a poor boys rifle ,it was all steel clad and no brass fittings ,didn't turn out to bad ,the butt plate was easy ,the trigger gaurd was forge welded to give finger holds and steel thimbles to hold the ramrod ind place ,love this gun and sort of takes you back when sitting round the glow of the fire ,cant work the photo thing otherwise would send some pics, take care ,glen

  8. linseed oil and all of the above ,how do you keep your hammer head in place ,always used steel wedges ,a good mate down in orange told me about useing wooden wedges and a piece of steel tubing (steel tubing champhered and punched in sawn off and hit down flush)best thing since sliced bread , :D

  9. a mate of mine collected mousetraps ,he had thousands of the buggers ,rangeing from very simple to very complex, one of his traps from the early 1900'stook a 22 sized blackpowder short cartridge,it was baited up the mouse stuck his head inside and had his head blown off, wouldn't be so hot at 1 in the morning but you would know when to reset it

  10. yep think about what you burn ,coal is something i dont burn ,used to untill in the fadeing light of my forge a million shards of glass in the smoke, nothing is safe in confined space unless you think about ventilation, use only charcoal these days ,still have a slight cough from twenty years of coal ,another thing ,never put galvenized steel in your forge ,evil gear ,take care ,glen

  11. back on again nothing like confusing the telco with a move ,a lot of good ideas ,that john deere smith is a beauty, here in gympie there is a couple of decent old slab built consructions at two good old pioneers villages ,thinking of a blend of old rock that lies around our place and iron bark trees that there are a heap of on our place ,thanks all when i learn to put pics on forums will send some in ,cheers ,glen :D

  12. ahh at last we move into our new place on 2 and a half acres ,always wanted a small piece of bushland ,now to build a forge ,have a colonial idea for the building ,slab building built out of the many giant gum trees that will have to come down, way to close to our home ,am up for ideas that maybe can help in the final choice, love to see your pics ,cheers ,glen
