  1. I just received The Blacksmith's Cookbook in the mail. It is an interesting explanation and no doubt what I assumed I'd find (more or less) when I asked the correct group of people. So, thanks again and I'll report on the success of this procedure when I get time to get to it...!
  2. Fellas, Thanks for the input. I found the book "The Blacksmith's Cookbook: Recipes in Iron" on ebay. I looked at the pictures on the posting and one of the pictures apparently alludes to the technique you are describing. I ordered the book. There is one more available. This is the link should any of you be interested... <Commercial link removed>
  3. Hello, I need to bend a 1.5" x 1.5" piece of angle iron into a circle about 32" in diameter with the leg out. I searched this site for anything similar, but didn't see it. I have the Harbor Freight compact bender and ring roller, but neither one of them are quite right for this job IMO. I would expect there should be a good "old school" method to get this done. I was imagining cutting a disc out of thick plywood to this diameter, cutting holes around the inside of the edge to clamp the angle to. Heat with a torch and clamp, heat and clamp, rinse and repeat until all the way around the disc, all without catching the disc on fire. However, I thought I would just inquire to this group of experience as to a better method. Thoughts? Thanks in advance...
  4. Finally I'm getting somewhere. I painted the hardware over the weekend and installed the bubble glass in the upper doors. I just got finished reassembling and took these pics. Obviously, I have some touch up etc., but I am pretty pleased with where this is and where it's going. On to the Wine racks...
  5. Beth and Aquamanlr, Thanks for the bones.... Ok, so I got both the upper cabinet doors hung. So, this is the (near) completion of the first phase of this project. I think I may go ahead and paint the hinges and handles and go ahead and mount the bubble glass in the upper doors just to get some true completion. Then it will be on to phase 2 which is the wine racks that will go in the upper cabinets. I think I will keep them fairly simple, but I'm certainly open to any suggestions or links to any good ideas anyone might have. Thanks in advance for any of that... Enjoy the pics....
  6. Ok, I got my first upper cabinet hinge completed and fitted up. I'm really happy with how these are turning out. For the door pull, since the frame of the door is thin, I think I'll go with a regular handle type pull instead of a ring pull like the lower cabinets. I forged one, but it stuck out too much from the front of the door. I guess that's the good news of doing your own blacksmithing work, you can just forge another....enjoy the pictures....
  7. OK, some more progress (glacial, tho it may be!). I finally assembled the lower doors and hung them to get the fit right. The jury (you know who) decided that the finish will indeed be black paint (my personal favorite). Pictures for your entertainment....
  8. Ok, more progress. With the prototype door hung, tweaked and juried (the wife), I had a little time in the barn this morning producing elements for the remaining 2 lower doors. I still have more pieces to crank out, but had to quit to do some other things. This is the first really nice Saturday we've had here in Oklahoma in a while and I'm trying to hurry and outrun spring getting this done....;-)
  9. Very Nice. I have a leg vice permanently installed in front of my anvil and I recently picked up another at a garage sale (for next to nothing). I was debating on where/how to mount it, but this gives me a new perspective on this. So, how much do you think your setup weighs? Also, is it stable enough to do some serious twisting, etc? I really envision the second vice "helping" the primary by holding long work pieces, etc., but I'm still mulling this over in my mind...Any ideas would be appreciated....
  10. Now, here's what I've accomplished so far: I made a hinge that has 2 straps, even though its really 1 big hinge. I'm not sure of the name of this type of hinge. If anyone knows, let me know. The second picture is the top part of the hinge up close. The first picture shows how the door will look with the ring handle attached. I'm still working with that on sizing and placement. Anyway, I hope to get this whole thing completed before I run out of forging weather...more to come...
  11. This is my first post. This project is basically cabinet hardware for some cabinets I have built in my basement for wine storage. The first picture is the lower cabinet, the next picture is a door for the upper cabinet and the last picture is the upper cabinet. I had some barn beam scraps left over from construction and had them milled to 1" thick. As I am quite the intuitive carpenter, I had some professionals build this cabinetry. I do have bubble glass for the upper cabinet doors and I'm going to put LED strip lighting in and under the upper cabinets. So, now its time to craft the hardware for this stuff. After seeing some of the projects on this forum, I have to admit I'm a bit intimidated to post my work here. However, my wife is pleased with it and that's what is most important, I'm sure all you husbands would agree... So, I am going to make the following: Hinges and door pulls for the 5 doors 2 wine storage racks to go in the upper cabinets and finally a pendant light fixture for the ceiling My progress thus far is in the next post...
  12. Hey, I'm new to the forum. I've been doing some ornamental blacksmithing for a few years. I built some light fixtures, gate hardware, etc around the house. I've been off of it for a couple of years and kinka getting back into it. Anyway, I've spent a little while reading some posts and this looks like a good place to learn and share. I look forward to doing both... Viny
