  1. hey there mrkiddi,
just joined the forum and this is my first post. i'm quite new to bladesmithing myself and wanted to complement you on a great looking knife. looks way better than my first one. well done sir :)

Welcome to the Forum :) i can tell you that you will learn Alot here and everyone is willing to help!. and thank you for the compliment!.
maybe you can post a picture of your knife on this forum? i would love to see how you are starting out! ;)

  2. Icies have great temperaments, falki is our second. Abby is now 4 years old and a rescue. I can't imagine anyone either turning her in or losing her and not looking till they dropped. The more I learn about icies the better I like them. Folk here in the US call them Icies, we can be ALMOST as bad as the British about nicknames.

A year ago I got hit by a tree I was felling and Abby is one of the dogs who saved my life by getting Deb's attention in the house and pointing to my broken bleeding body when she came out to see what the fuss was. The pic is Abby who's mostly icy and a little who knows what, maybe.

I pity folk who don't share their lives with a dog.

haha! Icies! and i agree with you...people who don't know the love of a dog, are missing out :) . how are you after the accident? have you started hammering at it again?

  3. Not to be difficult, but it might help if you explain what you mean by a Bowie, or post a pic. The word has been applied to so many shapes and styles of blade that it has almost ceased to have meaning anymore.

    This shape:) post-12245-038865800 1286487460_thumb.jp

  4. That'll work. It's good to see good improvisation, it's so often the case a person getting into the craft tends to overthink and over design everything. This is a simple, clean and functional set up. Well done.

I'd for sure have a coffee pot sitting on top of the barrel, maybe a pot of soup in winter.

The only real things I have to add to what you've already done are:

1, for long stock make a door in the rear of the drum so you can pass long stock through.

2, I can't tell from the pics but setting it at a good working height will really help. There are more than one prefered height for the forge. I like the fire at a comfortable height to look into. Some guys like it set so they can lay long stock on the anvil's face or use the forge table as a helper for the anvil. One serves a as helper for the other.

You're going to work yourself out of the newcomer ranks in darned short time if you keep this up.

    Frosty the Lucky.

it made adjustments to the Disc itself, i cut a little of the sides to get longer bits of steel in there. im going to cut a small hole on the other side... but for now i'll just keep it like that until i have to use it. and about the height i have put another stack of firebricks under tha anvil and it is at about the same height as the barrel

  5. Don't you just love it when the stars align in your favor? Congratulations all round!

Let's hear it for the good things coming from Iceland! The pic is Falki, our Icelandic Sheepdog pup.

    Frosty the Lucky.

it's great!:D that puppy is cute! i have two dogs, one of them an Icelandic sheep dog. i couldn't have asked for a more loyal dog:)
  6. Well...the loooong wait is over and i have made my first knife using only an anvil and a hammer!.
i have been waiting to get a forge and anvil for ever!
i haven't been able to get an anvil for a pretty long time and i never thought i could get coal unless i would have to spend a Fortune!
but...my prayers were answered when a man called me the other day about an ad i had put on a website and he told me that he had a used anvil for sale!.
i was like a dog with a bone i was so happy!.
but then i realized that i had nothing to do with an anvil unless i had coal, the very same day my brother entered the room and told me that he had talked to a local blacksmith(i had no idea there was one in my neighbourhood)
and he had told him that i should just visit the Aluminium smelting plant and talk to someone there and i would get as much coal as i wanted!
so my Blacksmithing days have begun and im happier than i have been in years! so,I can finally call myself a proud Blacksmith :D

  7. how are you venting the fumes?

i am going to cut a hole on top of the Barrell and a 2 meter long pipe that leads out of it...
but in the mean time it just comes out of the cut out side...
i just make sure i don't get in the way when im not picking up the metal:)
  8. This is my setup:) Brake disc forge and 50kg anvil.
i put a barrel over the Forge because of wind and to keep the heat inside.
i quite like this setup, didn't cost me anything but it's really small so i may have to modify the sides to get the heat to the middle of the blades im making.
im using coke to fuel my forge. lucky me to have a aluminium smelting plant nearby so i can get as much coal/coke as i want for free!
