  1. Thats the response I was looking for. Quicklime, bad, limerock goes in the driveway. lol I remember an uncle talking about using quicklime for fishing when I was a kid, scary stuff. Thanks for the heads up.
  2. There once was a man from Nantucket... nah I cant do it I don't know about elsewhere but lime rock is everywhere here in Florida. I have a big pile of it from where I just recently had a well put in. Seeing it today and knowing how it hardens when packed just got me to thinking. Not knowing what byproducts might come from heating it is exactly what stops me from experimenting. Was just curious if anyone knew because I cant seem to find more info than what I posted.
  3. Any thoughts or experience on using lime rock as a forge lining? May be a stupid question I dunno. Just a random thought, and I cant seem to find any info on how it reacts to heat. Edit: never mind stupid question. http://www.teichert.com/documents/public/MSDS%20Limestone.pdf "Decomposes at 530
  4. I have only had a couple fires in the "lively" style forge I built, plan on giving it its first true workout this weekend. I'm using clay and made a fire in it just to dry and harden it for use. That being said the one thing I noticed immediately was that on the second handful of charcoal I put into it something started sparking like crazy. I actually have a little raspberry behind my right ear where one of them landed, funny but not fun. Anyway, because its trench shaped and all the sparking was at one end, I isolated the cause pretty easily. There was a piece of half charcoal half bark in the end. once I pulled that out the sparking went away. After that I started watching as I was digging charcoal out of the bag, bark = sparks every time. Without that I have almost none. Hope this helps
  5. Hahah magnets... yeah. Lets just say nothing falls off my fridge, ever. Unless my girls swipe them. Never thought about using the casings though. Going to have to start seeing things in a different light. This is going to be fun.
  6. Being an IT guy there's not alot of metal around what I do, but it just so happens that there's a full machine / welding shop as part of the facility I work on. Scrap permits are kind of rare though. I'll just have to choose wisely. Thanks for the welcome.
  7. Hello all, Ive been reading my way around your site for a few days now and would like to try some of the things Ive seen. Think Ive acquired all I need to give it a go on a very crude level, just to get a feel for it. Charcoal forge and the biggest flat chunk of steel I could scrounge. I plan on trying them out this weekend and have a feeling I'll be back here soon. I just wanted to say thank you for all the amazing info you guys post to your site. I don't think I would have come far enough to try this without it. :D
