    4140 is an oil quench material. I will be sur to Anneal them when finnished. Wd&mlteach nice job on the tongs. matweb is a good resource for material data.:)

    It is nice to know others struggle with tong making. I am on my third attempt. This time using 5/8Dia. 4140 if they work I will post a pic. This whole Blacksmithing is so different than Machining. I like it.

    Hi I am new to this forum, but i will put in my oppinion. I sugest H-13 heat treated and double Tempered it will not heat check and will take a beating. Hope this helps Wayne
