Oak Hill Forge
Does anybody know what type A/C motors the old forges with the 100 ohm rheostat used ? I don't think this type control will work with the modern capacitor start 110 V A/C motors of today ? I understand how to do speed control with 3 phase motors and DC motors, but I'm puzzled how these worked ?
HWooldridge
They were AC/DC brush type motors with fixed impedance locations in the rheostat. Since the fan is under no load, it is easy to start the motor so a lower voltage works just fine - same principle as the trigger on a VSR drill motor. I have a factory Buffalo forge with blower and rheostat - it has 5 fixed locations but the lowest setting has too much blast with the air damper wide open, so the damper acts as the primary control for a well maintained fire. I've both read and been told that these blowers were designed to run 2-3 forges from one fan. I think mine would do that easily since the highest speed setting will blow the coke out of the pot - don't ask me how I know...
