John Tilton
This anvil - or at least it's stand - was removed from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute forge shop. I am looking at buying it to take it home (I am an alumni and current employee). I went to check it today and saw these strange casting marks. There is a 15 cast on the foot under the horn that means 150 ponds. I know that the *43* is supposed to indicate the year - 1943 - that it was cast. But there is that tilted "H" on either side that I cannot find anything about. It is definitely a Vulcan with the raised Vulcan logo on the side of the body. But the "H"s have me stumped. Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
My 110 pound Vulcan was also cast in 1943 but does not have any extra cast letters on it like yours. I would say they may have been added due to a special request. Maybe for a run of anvils for a hardware store or general merchandise store like Sears or Montgomery Ward that had the H's in the name. That is my best guess. Hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened steel face, which usually will do more harm than good.
