The Academy was started to preserve and teach the arts of our past so that they are not lost to future generations. Classes include tinsmithing, basketry, cooking, quilting, and blacksmithing. The 16 Hour Beginning Blacksmithing classes are taught on a continuing basis and specialty classes, such as tong making, forge welding, repousse, etc. are offered throughout the year. Our instructors are drawn from a large pool of local and outside talent, bringing a fresh and sometimes unique approach to projects. Beginning classes teach history, safety, tool usage, fire maintenance, hammer control, basic forge welding, and demonstration techniques. Don A
Dollywood Preservation School - Blacksmith Shop 1020 Dollywood Lane Pigeon Forge, TN 37863-4101 (865) 428-9445 Fax (865) 428-9449 Website:www.dollywood.com Dollywood offers two-day workshops, eight hours each day for beginning and intermediate students. The beginning class focuses on getting set up, forge techniques and personal direction. The intermediate class works around the specific project of each student or refinement of specific skills. We limit the class size to four students and often have a one-on- one class. Michael Rose and Richard Williams teach the classes and are on staff on a year round basis and can offer classes by appointment at the student's convenience. Richard and Glenn Donly also offer knife making classes on the same format. In addition to the Crafts Preservation Program, Dollywood has started, in conjunction with Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee, a 'for credit' class on the semester format. Students sign up for the class through Walters State, then report to Dollywood during the scheduled class time. Earning three college credits, the students will not only learn basic blacksmithing, but also the business aspects and demonstration side of the craft. If I'm not mistaken, Dollywwod has dropped this program completely. I could be wrong, but I believe they have found roller coasters and food vendors to be more profitable than "craft preservation". They still have the shop in operation, but there's no training anymore; not that I know of. If they were still doing this, I'd be signed up for Richard Williams' class in a heartbeat.
