From a cost perspective, you do not want a generator. We were running a 480v, 600 amp service at the machine shop where I work during daylight hours and started tripping slo-blo fuses weekly because we added too much equipment without doing load calcs. During the 90 days it took to upgrade the service, we rented a 100 hp engine driven compressor and a 50Kw genset (both diesels) to augment air and power. The cost and inconvenience factors were enormous and everyone was doing handstands when the power company finally turned on our new 1500 amp service a couple weeks ago. If you have 3-phase, you might approach your local power company and negotiate for a "large service" rate, especially if your shop has grown over the years and usage has increased.
