kogatana
I have found this pipe, and I wonder if I can use it as the air admission pipe for my forge. I have doubts because it might be covered with zinc, and I know from IFI's safety notes that zinc is not good for one's lungs. If it is covered with zinc, can I still use it for the above mentioned purpose, or should I grind the zinc away (as I started to do, see the pictures) or should I reserve the pipe for anything but heat related tasks? scrapman1077
If it were mine, I would get rid of it and work with something safer. But thats just me.
Woody
Black iron pipe is cheap. If there is any chance of that pipe coming into contact with the fire in the forge, don't use it. The problem with zinc is when it is exposed to fire the fumes it gives off are toxic. Also a secondary problem with zinc is breathing the dust from grinding it off. What scrapman said!! kogatana
From that post, I think I will not use the pipe I've found. You both confirm that. Black iron maybe cheap but I have no idea where to find it in Taiwan! Thanks Ludo
Woody
Ludo, they must have plumbers in Taiwan, also check the local scrap yard. Where did you get the galvanized pipe, check there they may have black iron pipe too. Woody
Ed Thomas
You can also get 3" stainless flex pipe from truck repair facilities. It is used to connect the exhaust.
