  2. Hey y'all, any of you experienced folk help me out by giving me a list of equipment Im going to need to buy to start making small knives I don't want anything too fancy, and I don't mind replacing a machine with doing it buy hand e.g Grinder being replaced with a metal file. I just want to know the very bare minimum stuff I require to make a knife and also how much it's gonna run me. Thanks everyone, Have a great day!
  3. Hi everyone My name is Adrien. I live actually in South Africa until July 2016. I am French. I am 20 years old. I actually working with a artist blacksmith in Cape Town during 3 months again, but I want to visit more workshops and discover more technics. It's why I a chose to contact all of you. My plan it's to do a trip of several blacksmith workshops in South Africa during 3 or 4 months. I don't do that for money, for me it's juste a great expérience for learn this beatiful and varied job. About my expérience : It's been 5 years since I started playing the Hammer in France a cross différent workshop and régions. In the begening a learn métalworking but I chose to become a artist Blacksmith. This year a chose to live this experience in South Africa because I love this wonderful country and meet some different cultures. It is also to work my English... I come in Cape Town in Septembre since the first week when I arrive I find a work and a house in Cape Town... But for the end of my year here I want to travel and meet some other blacksmith. If someone are interested about my project and wants to know more about my work send me a pm. Just some weeks or days with you, in your workshop in your town it's gonna be a great exchange and sharing moments. This trip will also help to know the South African blacksmith in France. Thanks for your help Best regard Adrien Corbin
  4. My second welding project - getting better at it but plenty of room for improvement! This project was a Welding Cart to keep everything organized - this project is so me (I have a weird need to keep things in order - OCD I guess)! Will finish it with a coat of paint when it isn't 10 degrees out. It keeps my welder and plasma cutter "mobile" and everything I need all in one place. One less idea just banging around in my head now - hopefully it gives you an idea of something similiar you may find helpful. BTW - it was all scrap yard finds.
  5. This project is to replace an existing old chain link entry gate for a volunteer community garden with a fabricated, more artistic one. I would like to use the existing 2 1/4" diameter galvanized posts (see attached drawing) which were placed by a commercial fence company several years ago in what was likely a sufficiently deep hole to prevent frost heaving but only about 8" diameter concrete footer. The inside dimension between the two posts is 49". I made my gate* 48" wide (which may be a problem, I realize now). The gate will weigh approx 150#. My question is the best way to hinge it. I was thinking that pintles would be best given the small gap size available. The left attachment would be a fabricated cylindrical clamp for the hanging post with a simple smaller cylinder welded on to receive the pintle. Is it necessary to use a bearing or cap it and put in a grease zerk? Also, how far apart should the hinges be and how far from the ends? In order to stabilze the gate and reduce the stress on the hanging post, I planned to add a top arch to span the space between the two posts. I welcome your comments and advice. *frame is 1 1/2" square tubing. 'vine' elements are 3/4" round tapered to 1/4". about 40 leaves of 12 gauge will be welded on the vines. gate is 4' x 6'. arch is 2 1/2" x 1/4" flat and letters will be 1" x 1/4" flat bent to shape. thanks.
