The old washtub forge. Well done. What are you using for an air supply?
attaching a funnel at the end of the pipe and using a hairdryer. -
OK guys i just built my first forge. I know its simple but I'm new at this, and it was in my means to make. The adobe is still drying in this picture. I just went out and checked it a few minutes ago the adobe is hardening and settling so now there is more room between the adobe walls (witch is what i hoping for).

yea but the guy at the store said every thing was galvanized. I guess he was wrong cause i cant think of why some one would galvanize steel pipe then paint it black....
Thanks for everyone's quick replies. -
I'd just build a little camp fire in the back yard and throw it it. Answers all the questions and gets it used to its new life. Question what size is it? I've been haveing trouble finding black Iron in large sizes on the local market.
1" X 36" Black steel pipe
^ thats whats on the label. Bought it from lowe's -
the pipe is going to be use as the Tuyere for the forge. Do you think i still have the strip the galvanized coating?

I was wondering, i bought pipe that was galvanized with what looks to be a coating of black paint can Hydrochloric acid remove the paint and galvanized coating from the pipe?
Thanks -

Another excellent source for the beginner is "The 50 Dollar Knife Shop" by Wayne Goddard.

Thanks for the tip.
I goggled the book and found a site where you can preview it a little. Looks to be a good book. -
OK i will add my location (thanks for the tip). And i figured practice was the key, as to anything.
And thanks for the quick reply. -
Hello i have been hanging around on the forums learning what i can. I watched, Knife Making Unplugged that was recommend in a post on the forum. That was a very good informational film, really answered most of my questions. Tim Lively makes it look too easy.
What i was wondering is, is it really that easy. Since I'm a beginner i was thinking of building this forge to start with. Charcoal Forge. But instead of using a hand blower use a spare hair dryer that i have. The parts i can easily get. I was wondering the knife that he makes is that type knife easy to forge for a beginner? Or do one of you recommend something better?
Thanks

yea sure
First fire be careful if you used cement it may explode.
Mine did but i was expecting it too, so i stayed back when i didn't have to be near it. When it exploded it just kinda blew off like slate didn't deform the forge. after that i ran it for about a hour and a half with no trouble.
