  1. OK ty I found this on another forum. "it's abrasion resistant steel . it's used for plow blades and such. they add Boron, Manganese, Nickel, and Chromium to make it wear resistant. this also complicates things when you want to "work" it or, weld it." Sounds like it would be very difficult to forge it in the first place.....but Iam new to this so it would simply be a guess.
  2. HI What I would like to know is if Abrasion Resistant plate which is found on semi trailers where the 5 th wheel connects to the trailer can be used to make knives either with forging or stock removal process. Also if anyone is aware of the make up of the steel, carbon content etc I would appreciate the information.
  3. Yes the move from Boksburg to Minnesota was most certainly an improvement. I am thinking that a move from Minnesota to say Alaska, Wyoming or Montana would also be an improvement.
  4. Hi all I recently purchased a DVD on knife making without power tools. It is called Knifemaking Unplugged by Tim and Marian Lively. I am waiting for it to arrive in the mail. I would like to know if anyone here has this DVD and what they think of it. I chose it since I have very minimal resources with which to acquire tools and I think thier approach suits a first timer and newbie such as myself. Anyway let me know what you think, also to the admins I did not find a video/dvd section so if this is the incorrect place for this post please feel free to move it.
  6. I agree the RR spikes are not great steel but I thought that using such easily availible steel to practice would be a good idea. You know, screw up a cheap/free piece of steel versus screwing up a more expensive one. Once again thanks for the advice.
  7. Welcome to the board, Alaska is high on my list of places to move to.
  8. I am formerly of South Africa and I have been living in this great country since 2002. I currently live in town but I am in the process of closing on a 6 acre property. I am not a smith yet hehe I plan to try my hand at bladesmithing as soon as I move to the rural property. I plan on starting with railroad spike knives and tomahawks. I do not have any equipment, experience yet but I plan on working towards those ends real soon. I am debating with myself whether or not to go with a propane forge or a coal forge, it seems easier to go with the propane forge although from my limited knowledge so far it would seem better to use coal for the purpos eof adding carbon to the steel? If this is incorrect I apologise I am in the very beginning stages of learning. Anyhow I am glad to be here and look forward to having many discussions with you all. Luke 22:36 36. Then he said to them, "But now, the person who has a wallet and a traveling bag should take them along. The person who doesn't have a sword should sell his coat and buy one.
