  1. Hey everyone

To start, I've got next to zero experience in any metal work. So I'm basically less than a novice skill level, having only heat my forge twice and heating and beating on two pieces of steel.

So my question is, I've found someone selling 2 tubs of wrought iron, which looks like old railing and the pieces are about 20" to 30" long.

I'm just wandering if it's worth getting and hold on to it till I have more experience/skills or should I pass on it. I've heard people talk about wrought iron but don't know what I'd do with it if I have it around.

    Any advice would be appreciated

  2. My forge is in the backyard of my cabin so it's open air. I've researched chrome removal and the hazards and may in the future try to use acid to remove it but not anytime soon. I'm 25 I've got time to search for other things to use in the forge and not risk my health. I do find it funny though my respirator I use for grinding and sanding is graded for use with the acids.

  3. Guy wanted 60$ for the box talked him down to 40$ for all of it. Most I'm keeping for use and others for forging. Thanks for telling me about the chrome hazards and  using an acid bath I was thinking of sanding it off. I research the best and safest way to remove it.

I am happy with finding that big plumber wrench

  4. Hi guys

I'm planning on going for a drive tomorrow hitting some garage sales and flea markets. Just wondering what are some of the things I should look for to practice on. I'm thinking old tools is the main thing to look for and don't know what else that might work. I'm still new to this so I'm looking for cheap metal to practice on.

    Any ideas would be helpful

  5. Sorry for the late reply thought I hit reply a week ago

The bar sitting in a groove I made running down the stump. I thinking of bending threaded around the bar and drilling through the stump to lock it in place but also allows me to remove it when I'm done weekend. As for the forge height it's fine for now I'll build something later for it to be higher. But I will be using some of the old fire bricks I have laying around to build higher walls for a bigger fire.

  6. Finally got to work on stuff and found out I need to cut about 5" off the anvil and surround the fire a little higher with old fire bricks to build up a bigger fire. But this is what I did one is a lawnmower blade and a random piece of metal I found in the bush don't know what it's from but it's been there probably 20 years maybe family owned the land for 30 years. So this was just a trial run. Looking forward to see what I can do later on once I fix the issues I've found 20210913_144701.thumb.jpg.ef81dfd8c3ea4616c968b0d81ede897c.jpg

  7. I have 2 weeks to figure out what I going to do with it. I'm planning on adding another layer of mix but I ran out. I don't even know when I can fire it up do to the fire ban in affect. so I probably work on mounting a railway track on end and a bar that's about 2x3in and maybe 4ft long to the stump

  8. First time doing it so I made a mistake with the amount of water. It was all good until I hit the bottom of the mixing bucket but It has time to dry. The pipe can be moved at anytime. I'm not planning on doing big projects until I get used to moving metal. So how high the sides don't really matter yet.

  9. Thank you guy's

I think I should clarify the things I'd change was more of how I was. I was 6.2 going in to high school and 6.5 leaving it I believed I had to fit the cookie cutter of if your big and tall you had to be quiet but intimidating to those around you and I didn't have much to say anyway. I never let myself get loose that's where I'd advise young me on. As for the schooling bit I was not overly concerned it's just looking back more options would have been nice.

  10. I'm not sure if I count in this talk since I'm only 23.

I'd have to say go for it you can only fail or get rejected and forget everyone else they won't matter in a few years. live the way you decide don't let others decide for you.

if I actually saw myself back in high school I'd punch myself in the face then list off all the things wrong with him and ask that girl to dance at grad also go to university or college

  11. Hi everyone

I'm still in the planning stages of set up the forge. I'm thinking of use the sand and clay mix for the base of my 36" fire pit but I'm wondering how it holds up to the weather like rain and snow. Also wondering what type of clay you guys use . I'm going to use a air mattress pump and pipes.
