  1. Ok, thanks! I had most of these problems (exept the distance from anvil-forge, and not having the hammer in hand) and it was pretty windy that day.
  2. I used a charcoal forge to heat up some rebar to what I think was an orange heat, placed it on the anvil and only got in about 5 hammer blows before it cooled to where I couldn't work it. Is this normal?
  3. Just filled in the User CP. Thanks for the welcome!
  4. I just filled in my location in the User CP as well as the other blanks. I am in the Valley View/Gainesville area for those that asked, I hope that's close. Thanks for the advice! I like the idea of setting it in concrete, because I can controll to some extent what its wheight will be. I'll look around for some machine shops and a friend of mine works in a weilding shop.
  5. I am completely new to blacksmithing. I have read the info on this sight and some others, the only thing that I dont have is an anvil. I dont know of any junkyards within 60miles of where I live so no RR track anvil and I dont want to spend $1200 for one. I took an old vice clamp and sawed off part of it. I want to set it in a bucket of concrete to make about a 50# anvil. Will this work for small projects? Or will the concrete chip apart?
  6. Hi everybody, I am a 16 high school junior who has always been facinated by metal working and blacksmithing in particular. I live about an hour north of Dalas/Ft. Worth on the border between OK and TX. (I live in TX) I just recently decided to see if I could start to actually work metal and found this site and used the blueprints to make myself a forge and I am currently working of a homemade anvil. I look forward to frequenting these forums!
