  1. I'm still just doing light forging for now, so I don't think a small anvil is a real deal-breaker for me. I don't have a large ball bearing currently (biggest I have is 1/2"), so I'm not sure if the drop test is reliable at that size. The face is a bit pitted, but it has been a military anvil it's whole life. Also, it has a BUNCH of military paint all over it, I didn't have much time to clean it off, so some of the "pits" might be residual paint still. As to the price, it's a no cost kinda thing. It sits in the shop and no one uses it anymore. The boss said he wouldn't miss it if it disappeared.

  2. Well, here we are with another of these plain-jane anvil IDs.

I have the ability to aquire this anvil from work, if it's worth having. I'll start by saying it's fairly light, I'd guess in the 50# range. It's obviously cast and, as the photos show, has a G20 embossed on one side. I can't make out any other markings and my search for "G20 anvil" comes up blank on the Google. Any help and feedback is ALWAYS appreciated. If you want/need any other photos, feel free to ask and I'll snag some more at work tomorrow.

"You can get an interesting effect by using a wire wheel and take off the black scale off one side of the flat, twisted "icicles" or one or two of the faces of the canes."

That's such an interesting idea! I'll have to try that when the call for presents is up again!

Thank you all for the great I put. You nailed it, I'm hitting with the heel of my hammer. I wasn't super worried though as most of the tail ends are getting ground off and a hole is getting punched in them too, but I need to work on my strikes.

I just bought a rounding hammer for myself for Xmas, so I can't wait to get it and learn how they work!

Also, here is the finished product of the canes. The icicles are on hold until I'm back at work (they have a bench grinder; I do not.)

  4. Well, this week ended with the linseed oiling of some Xmas presents for my family and friends. I won't lie, they don't look super fantastic, but I'm fairly proud of all of them for my first real undertaking in the blacksmithing world. The photo is of all of my ornaments before I wire wheeled off the forge scale and oiled them. They are drying now, so finished photos will have to wait. Hope y'all like em and have a wonderful week!

Phoenix is big enough that you should be able to score a big chunk of steel easy enough for an improvised anvil.

Well, I actually have 2 usable improvised right now. I bought a piece of rr track that is being used the right way and a 2' section of I-beam I'm just not sure what to do with yet. I have located, and started cutting the welds off, a large chunk of steel 1"ish thick. I actually made my first piece tonight! It's a poorly forged leaf...thing. I learned a bunch and plan on getting after it a bit more tomorrow morning!Snapchat-285588200.thumb.jpg.fa959eab9e9004a56262350ad097c65b.jpg

Welcome read up on the improvised anvil thread, sometimes its easier and cheeper to find an improvised anvil to begin with.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I actually finished up the forge and will making a smaller one this weekend. I ended up buying a good piece of rr track and it's working alright. Still looking out for a cost effective anvil. I did start the forge and work a little bit and I'm loving the learning so far!

  7. Thanks for the warm welcome!

Thank you! I made sure to read that before I made any post. Also, I thought it took last night, but successfully updated.

Have you met up with the AZ ABANA Affiliate yet?

I haven't had the pleasure yet. I'm planning on jumping into a couple classes at Grizzly in the next few months.

  8. Hello y'all!

I found this wonderful repository from Torbjörn Åhman. I am in the process of building a gas forge and on the lookout for a decent learner's anvil. I look forward to gleaning as much knowledge as I can and sharing my growth through this hobby.

A little about myself; my name is Alex. I'm a federal technician that is a mechanic for the National Guard. I've been in the Army for 9 years and a mechanic, professionally, for over 10. I do plenty of diy around the house and have recently found a love and desire to craft with metal.

    Cheers!
