Hello all. I just stopped by my local antique store on my way home from work to see if they had a leg vise on hand. Sure enough the owner did and I ended up leaving with a rusty old vise that he says he got up in Boston bar, BC. Perhaps it is a remnant of the gold rush that happened in the mid to late 1800 in BC. Any who. I brought it home and quickly disassembled it and started at it with a cup brush. The only mark I found was on the female end of the vise thread. A letter stamped M or W. Can anyone help me I'd this vise? Sorry if my photo size is too late. I have no idea how to reduce.

Thanks frosty.
I am still testing my forge. I have tried a weld once with no success. I was not using flux though. Thanks for all the great information.

I warn my students about not bending their head THROUGH the dragon's breath and once lost some facial hair helping a smith get their new to them propane forge working correctly. It wasn't tuned even close and wasn't putting out much heat. As their tank was down below the entrance I suddenly got a full blast of exhaust out of it when I hit the right fuel pressure/air mix.
Thomas. This photo was take with a lower pressure regulator. I have since changed to a high pressure regulator and a smaller oriface. The result was a hoter forge and much less flame out side the forge. That said. I try to be vigilant of the flames and fumes coming out. Thanks for the good advise.

Thanks Steve S. Good advise. I only use the forge outside and store the tank outdoors as well. I would hurt to get an extension and keep the tank away from the forge.

Thank you CGL. The anvil brand Is happybuy. There are a bunch of them out there that use the same mold. With 'Acciaio' one the side. It is cast steel ith a hardened machined surface. C45 is the steel I think.

Striking anvil plates
in Stands for Anvils, Swage Blocks, etc
Posted
Hello everone.
I am making a striking anvil from 2.5" steel plate. My plan is to weld it to a another .5" plate slightly larger with 3 2x2" 3/16" thick legs. My issue is that most of the striking anvils I have seen the second plate is much thicker or there are a series of stacked plates of varying thickness. Is there something I am missing or are those just extra plates there for a good reason?
