  1. High grit flap disks for the 4.5 grinder. i did it to mine the other day. I just like my things looking new. its just me. every year i take the wire cup brush to all my tools like my pipe wrenches and so one, buff em, clear coat them, and oil them down. i have had the same pipe wrenches for 10 years and heavy use in them. just how i like my things.

Ps. my anvil looks pretty now.

  2. Ok, I bought a couple. spent just over $200 for both. One is an Ajax 125 pounder, the other is a Colombian (thanks Finnr) that is 100 pounds.

Sometimes I spent money carelessly. The Ajax is in rough shape, and I want to refinish it. If I screw it up, no biggie, still a useful garden ornament if anything.

The question is, if I were to flatten the face and clean up the sides by sacrificing some meat of the anvil, would it ruin the anvil? I will only be using these anvils to learn from. Things like forge welding and folding metal, not do much design yet.

    What do you think?

    Cheers,

    J.

  3. Welcome aboard Willy, glad to have you.

A lot of guys do just what you did, some don't. That's the best thing about building your own, you can build what you want. Then after a while you can build something else you want and finally after a few tries get one you actually like. Seriously, every time you build a piece of equipment, tool, etc. and start using it you realize there was something else you wanted on it, something you never use or want somewhere else, etc. etc. It's never ending.

This is my most recent propane forge, less than a year old and I have a change list nearly as long as the original plans. (Plans . . . RIGHT!)

If you'll click "User CP" and edit your profile to show your location it can make a big difference. IFI is represented by members from more than 50 countries and a lot of info is location specific. If local folk know you're around they can invite you to get togethers, tip you to tool deals and offer hands on help.

Using 2 inch Kaowool with bricks on the inside would give me a working area of about 6" x 12". Is there an ideal spacing for the burners? What I am spacing mine at is about 5.5 inches. Should they be closer or will that work. I can always add more kaowool and brick to make the inside tighter.

    Thanks

  4. I thought I would post the progress of my forge. It will take awhile as I am building it in phases that I can afford.

I bought an old air compressor yesterday at the scrap yard for $20. In the past 24 hours I have stripped it down and figured out what I want to do.

I do have a question about the propane burners.

See attached pics. The last pic is kind of what I had in mind.

Tank dimensions after doctoring would be about 18" long by 12" in diameter.

2 - 1" propane burners, which can be swapped out to 3/4" burners if needed. Those are the exsisting hole and a new hole i will drill in and weld 2 1" eyelets.

Only the front door will open. I will cut out where the "X" is the reattach the cut off part as the door.

1.5" of kaowool to surround the inside. Will cut a small hatch on the other side to slide steel through if needed.

I want to forge weld. What do ya think? Will this work? Overkill?

    Ideas, thoughts, criticism?

    Thanks

  5. I gave it a clear coat because i despise rust and put it all back together. Looks pretty sharp. Not sure if I can really set this up in the city. Going to build a gas one for the city. But none the less, its looking pretty good.

  6. I have read the details in the gas forge section.

I have a question. I want to build a 2 burner forge. What would be the ideal diameter. I am using it for knife making and some small decor. I was thinking an old bbq type propane tank. A 20lb propane tank, and old expansion tank, or something along that line.

    Any thoughts?

  7. I will be doing a lot of scouring this summer as soon as I get a truck. Lots of old homesteads around here. The way it went was you forged your own tools and so on back then, because things weren't so readily available.

My uncle was telling me about a treadle hammer or something like that around our old town laying outside. I am definitely on the hunt for this unit.

  8. Wouldnt luck have it. Wondering around an old farm yard the other day and found a steel sticking out of the grass. Pulling it out and its an old Vulcan coal forge made in Ontario. It has a round thing you spin at the base of the forge that you spin 180degrees and it opens the port a different size. No cranks fan though, but still, pretty darn cool.

I will post pics once i clean it all up. Im pretty excited. There was also a few other things i will go back for eventually, but the forge was the main artifact to pull from there.

    Peace

  9. Jaret, You going to be making any jewelery soon? I like the short Depew type shop built helve hammer. If I ever get some money ahead I think that I would build that one.

I would like to know more. The jewelry thing will come after i have the forgery built. I would like to take the ideas of jewelry and implement them into the handles. Can you tell me what this helve hammer is? I would be interested in knowing more. Basically I am writing a plan over the next 3 years. Understanding certain components will help me forecast my plans and I can keep an eye open for materials as I scour for materials. PLease let me know.

    Thanks
