  1. I just picked up an anvil of craigslist its a vulcan with a 25 stamped on the leg under the horn so im guessing its 250 pounds? it has been painted atleast twice and it was hard to tel the condition of the face when i purchased it and it was a little rougher than i was hopping but hopefully it will be a good upgrade to my #4 fisher.
  2. What would help identify it after the etch? Will be posting pics after etch anyways just wondering what would help determine. Thanks a lot
  3. Whats up guys, Yesterday i went out to my secret wagon grave yard (south shore mass) to grab some wrought iron wheel bands and poke around with a metal detector to see if there was anything else i wanted. I grabed a large band that was wrough,t an axle wich i haven't cut into yet and a set of leaf springs. When i broke of the last bit of my cut in the leaf spring it broke like the wrought inron wheel, not as stringy but looked wrought to me until i started to grind it, the sparks were not like wrought iron at all. the first two pictures are of the leaf spring and the next two are of the wheel band for comparison and the last is the three pieces i found, the axle is 7 feet long. I have been metal detecting this area for a wile and have found alot of item i can date from 1650 to mid 1800 but mostly 1700s - early 1800s if thats any help.
  4. Hello everyone, Im a new member and new to blacksmithing. I have been finding the answers to most of my questions on this site for a wile now through googling and finally decided to become a member. First of all i would like to say thanks to all the members for answering and asking the countless number of questions i and many other beginners have. I built a break drum forge about 2 years ago (currently designing a more suitable forge, will be posting the final plan to be scrutinized before building ) got a few files, some mild scrap and fork lift tines for anvil from the scrap yard and thats pretty much how it started. After countless "learning experiences" at the forge , youtube videos and reading all the info i could find i started to get the hang of it. Eventual i got a small anvil 42 pound fisher from the same scrap yard, still waiting for a bigger one to find me but its alot better than nothing. Lately i have been forging tools , small decorative items, a few knifes, working on making identical scrolls and all the classic nic nakcs. Once i get my new forge built i plan on undertaking a project way out of my experience range to force me to learn new techniques any good suggestions will be appreciated. I discovered a bunch of wrought iron wagon parts on my property a long time ago and just started forging with it and have a few questions ill be asking in the future {forgot to take pics) so you will be hearing from me soon and hopefully ill have the skills need to be able to answer questions for others aswell.
