I am planning on making hardy anvils 2-3” tall  out of 3” diameter 1018 round steel stock. After reading this thread should I do anything at all to the anvils besides welding a piece of square stock to one end and normalizing the piece I intend on being the hardy anvil?

Thanks I was told it was really old by the guy that gave it to me. There any way to tel how old ?

I have an old quadrant but I don’t know the quality of it or if it was forged or not. It appears to be well made but I don’t know much about how it was made. There is no date or makers mark I can find. I use it to spear gar and buffalo at night from my boat. It’s got two gar over 4’ on its resume and several small Buffalo.

Are there any classes offered near Little Rock? If so approximately how much do they run?

Also where and what time is the may 26th central chapter meeting in Roland? I know where Roland is. 

What all did you use to cut it like that?  I’d like to have the triangular cut out in mine so I could grind it to the shape I want. Where would I take mine to have it cut also? I don’t think I could afford the grinder blades it would take for me to do it

Can anyone tell what that hammer was actually made to do?  the end that should be at more of a point is kind of Mushroomed. This steel it is made of seems kind of soft also. I think I will remove the handle and attempt to form it into a drift  provided it is Not too soft

The hames handle makes the hammers easier to keep a good grip

I have a very large hammer that was used to punch pretty big holes. I’m not really sure exactly what kind of hammer it is actually.  It is kind of in bad shape and I would like to grind it down into a hammer eye punch because I plan on forging or buying a drift soon. Does anyone have any kind of objection to grinding this one down and if so why? 

Thanks Charles, while I may not do any grinding on mine I do think I will stand it on it’s end and use it that way

That  one had a broken handle so I carved and sanded it down to fit in the hames handle correctly and I do plan on sharpening it and getting the rest of the  rust off also. Everyone I know that sees it tried to steal it for some reason?

I took a couple of hours this afternoon to built a stand for my railroad track anvil. It is my first one I’ve ever built so it’s not top notch but it hasn’t fallen apart yet and  it works pretty well. What do u guys think?

I plan on buying a book on blacksmithing. I am new and have never forged anything. What book would u guys say is the most informative for a “newbie “ like me?

I posted on here the other day and you guys answered all of my questions but my thread got deleted for some reason and I can’t remember what everyone said so I need to ask again I guess. What type shape and size of steel do I need to make strong light tongs and which type of round steel will make hammer heads? Also what width, thickness and length of 5160 do I need to make a hog splitter or a large cleaver?
