  1. Something I didn't know till now was that I can get grain growth. So yeah I'll try this idea out and see.
  2. I was thinking of something along that line. I might get a forge bigger though so I can do a little more later down the line. Im thinking of saving up my Christmas money and putting it into buying or making another forge. I have an idea of one that I want to build and may be able to build it for $100-$200. It would be longer but I would have a lot more that i could control on it. (I will draw it up the best that i can and see what you think of it. also price is not certain yet). side note also if I can make what I want genraly I will make it unless it is overly difficult.
  3. Where I'm at it was 1 degree out and still dropping. Soon as the sun goes down it's predicted to be -10 or lower. Also did some garage cleaning when I was gone with a friend. Somehow my forge broke during that. I was not home to see it. But it is semi ok that it broke 1) it cost me less than $15 to make. 2) I was wanting to replace it anyway, it was falling apart slowly. But I'm praying it warms up to 20 degrees and little breeze if anything. Also I found out the forge broke only 30 minutes from the time I posted this which is 3:20 central time.
  4. I see where you are comming from there. i have learned from thoughs mistakes.
  5. I hate the rebar so soon as possible in getting away from it. Also seeing if I can afford a gas forge soon so I dont wreck more knives as easily as the last few. (Could not see them in the fire so they burned or like said i had to go and help out my parents) two lessons there that I learned from.
  6. Here is my work so far the nicer works got melted by accident. I'm still a little mad about wrecking them. The hook is my most recent work done and the knives were kinda just put away for a while so they don't look as nice. But the first one the third and fourth do have an ok edge on them.
  7. I have watched many hours of documentries on swords and I follow atleast two people that know something about swords and I learned quite abit from them. along with the the swords I based the first few parts on just european swords. i know that other designs are diffrent, one day ill look into thoughs types of swords but right now just the common one.
  8. how do I add pictures to my posts so that I can show what ive made. (granted not all of it some was destroyed in my forge due to having to help out my parents with other things that moment) so whay is remaining and inprogress (all need an edge better than what they have on currently).
  9. The sword should weigh roughly around 2-3 lb for the normal ones that we think of the larger two handed swords are 4-6 lb and the great sword just a liit larger. The balance point of the sword should be close to the hilt. most of the hilts were piened attached/(meaning attached by hitting the remaing of the tang sitcking out dow flat to lick it in) that or pins and leather or cord wrapped like the katana wakizashi and the odatich. also could have just leather wraps. most swords have to points on the blade where when hit thoughs points tend not to vibrate as much (in back and fourth motions are not as exessive mostly just faster and closer distance). how do I add pictures to my posts so that I can show what ive made.
  10. Very impressive marc1 see I had this idea for a sword from a book that I read called kingdoms dawn by chuck black. I have an idea for it but I wanted a war ready blade so I cams here to seek help on what would make it war ready. And beautiful to look at so that is why I have not done it yet. For c-1 toolsteel what I want to do is just have it go cut down small trees of at most 2 inches and stinging nettles in summer. Along with my wanting to learn how to use a sword like in the past (I do know the movie stuff is made up and I want the tradisinal trainin) so if a knight would have carried a sword they would be very proud of this one.
  11. Ok will do Glenn and buzzkill I do know the terminology I just miss read the information. I laughed at myself when I read that because like I said i know both terms for that. I may upload a video of what I have made so far and what my shop looks like. (Granted messy right now but plans to clean it up in the future) would that be of some help to you see where improvements can be made and what I should keep.
  12. And thank you for thinking I have some chance Thomas it does mean a lot to me I do read every post and try my best to read it.
  13. Ok thank you Glenn I will consider reading all of these. Also I do go through an read all the post. I have excellent control over my temper. I had a D- in a class I took (very very difficult class) not a single moment did I get mad even though I did not pass it. I've worked with two blacksmiths and both have asked how long I've been doing some of this stuff for and I said first time and second time ever and to some degree I've impressed them with the skill I had. I don't really have hope to go get a job anywhere else or do anything else really because I don't have any skills that would benefit the people. My generation is very skilled with technology usually. But I am not I'm just kinda that weird outcast kid of the school so yeah this is my only hope pretty much that's why I'm not giving in to giving up. I'm kinda shy so I don't talk to new people all that much. And my knowledge of what my generation likes is slim. In the business world like Trump and all them I would not do well in either. So that's why I'm not letting this go. I do feel sorry for making you people try to help me out because I know some people may not be happy about that and I'm sorry about any backlash from me. And with dangers I know what can happen with what I'm doing. And growing up for me I pretty much grew up around fires. I work with, by, and around them for fun every week. When I was younger I was taught respect fire and I won't be burned. To me fire is like driving a car to you. And I love the fact you are worried about my safety and thank you for showing some care it means a lot to me. But anyway I guess I need to restate my initial question which it for the typical sword look we have of the English broad sword what metals would accomplish most if not all of what I wish to have in parenthesis (durable edge, will not break easily on powerful thrusts) for the grind I wish to have what is in parenthesis also (grind that keeps a sharp edge well and is durable. I was thinking of a Scandinavian grind) finally what Rockwell hardness would make the steel be more like a spring. The sword is just for me to mess around with and cut down trees with. Also to say I have the only sword ever made that is know of from my favorite book series. (The sword is realistic in design and not an the over exaggerated swords like in anime shows). If more info is needed just ask and I'll do my best to respond to the question. I guess I'm not to good at that and makes some people kinda mad. So sorry for any inconvenience.
  14. I again need to specify more so sorry for that inconvenience. The sword would be for hacking down trees and something cool to own. I've also contacted the author and he said it was a cool idea if I can pull it off. Also I do agree weapon making sould not be done with children. I am however considered a young adult (other people say that I am a young adult so I guess that's what I am considering I'm over 16). I will have other blacksmiths helping me along on this build. My family is aware of me doing this and fully support me doing so. And again I'm not blessed with the power of writing. So if I come off as arrogant or anything offensive truly I don't mean it as such. Just a young man working to fulfill my dream as a bladesmith.
  15. And one question completely off topic why does it say hidden and needs to be approved by a moderator. Because you are still not listening. Since you asked this question AGAIN.... either you have a very short memory or you refused to read why the last time. Read the pinned posts, stop asking us until you start doing something, Now is a good time to learn general smithing, which was suggested to everyone in the pinned posts you refused to read for yourself,
  16. I should have specified more clearly on my goal to lead me to the best steel choice. I want a sharp and durable edge and ridged enough to not snap or bend easily. I do know that there is no perfect steel. I want steel that would have a balance between everything I listed above. What would a suggest grind be also to keep the edge nice and sharp with the maximum durability. And what is the suggested Rockwell hardness to have the sharp edge and bend for the blade. The blade I want to make is one from a book that I am reading and I wish to make a replica since one does not exist yet.
  17. Hey I was wondering what would be the best steels for making an English broad sword. It would be a one handed sword. I want to have a very sharp edge while staying quite strong as so it will not just snap in half on a thrust. Also what grind will give maximum sharpness and durablility to the swords edge. One more thing is the suggested Rockwell hardness of the steel to make it quite powerful. And also to the people helping me out on the other form about the crucible I did not mean to offend anyone I was considering the dangers but my post did not indicate that. I was mostly asking for future reference and sorry to not indacate that either. I was also having a kinda difficult week so kinda wanted something to go right. Then also someone suggested I was trying to be cool about that. I don't have anything to act cool about I'm just kinda ugly. And have just a handful of friends. Also I don't boast about any of my work. I do it silently just to satisfy and awe people. But yeah I never meant to come off as arrogant or attention seeking just kinda wanted the challenge so I can appreciate the easy way of doing everything also. So sorry to everyone I accidentally offended.
  18. This is something I will not attemp so that is why I was wondering if a company could make one for me if I sent in a blue print on the mold that I would want. That or one that could machine the tongs for me.
  19. Is there places that would be able to cast or form a set of tongs for me. And nothing of large extent either. Some thing a little bigger than the beaker tongs used in science class except made out of tungsten.
  20. I have another question also. That is where can I find tongs for crucibles that are made out of tungsten or tungsten carbide.
  21. I plan on pouring into a bar mold. after I figured out a way to get the crucible out of the furnace. And since I have two years to go until I have to leave high school I have some time to make a recipe for the scrap. But yes I know the dangers and that is the reason that I like this. And the challenge of making my own steel. It would give me a sense of pride to succeed. But yeah if I fail by the end of if the two years the. I plan on buying the steel.
  22. With the dangers that you are telling me how can I avoid them without all the safety equipment, and what is the safety equipment that I need so when I get enough I can buy it. you cant avoid buying safety gear, why do you refuse to pay attention STOP before you kill yourself
  23. I know the fuel that I use will be charcoal and I know how to produce it. We have had a few bad storms come through the past summer and many trees went down and I have lots of wood that I can convert to charcoal. So fuel will not be an issue. The flux (whenever I see flux I oddly think of the flux comasitor from back to the future) that I'm going to use is sand and a shard of glass how much is my missing piece to my recipe. Like I've said before I have all the components to melt iron just missing the crucible to control my factors in the melting of the iron. But yes thank you for the link I did read a part of it and I feel kinda stupid for not looking at tungsten tongs for a way to get the crucible out of my furnace. But yes thank you I believe I may have found a way to fix my issue. Sorry though if I caused any of you great pain trying to tell me it's dangerous (well aware, have some burns to prove that lucky nothing of great extent) but yes thank you for your help and I'm going to look into this stuff a bit more. And again thank you so much.
