  1. Thanks for all the feed back guys. As far as the clay in the forge goes let me tell you this thing works great after a bit of time playing with it you can truly pick where u want to heat it's working awsome. And on the blower end I'm working on rebuilding the old crank blower for now I got another hair dryer and I worked it way longer than the last one and I had a good project for a first time project. Made me a coat hanger or hat hanger or whatever you want to call it and I must say I'm quite proud of it lol its been a good day playing with fire.

:D Now this is a Joke, just so everyone understands:lol: Does your  "Little one" have a hamster with cage you could borrow?  I gave a friend a fan off a pellets stove I had been saving, multi speed and designed to work 24/7 for months at a time he has it working.

Haha nope no hamsters here. And ya I thought about a wood stove fan

On the old blower do a lil research first because I've read on some that some old crank blowers can be a bit tricky. I have a champion 400 to freshen up that I've been reading about lately.

There are pictures of the blower on the first page of my post close to the top. Champion Lancaster geared NO. 40. I'll start doing research now and see what I can do for it.

I have seen an old Chevy truck heater blower mounted in a cut down coffe can (acualy two, one end had a cut out center to take mount the fan threw, and both were cut down one to an appropriate realty and the other as sprees in "lid") with a soup can nosel.

Bathroom fans are pretty strait forward as they have provisions for a duct to the outside.

    Drier blowers are another option...

Thanks Charles, luckily enough I get paid today so I will go do a lil browsing and see what I can come up with

I didn't mean my post to be rude in any way. I've found a lot of cheap newer products to fail at what I needed them to be. Your not alone in the "money lost in trying" boat.

No I didn't take it as rude in anyway I was just trying to be humorous. And ya I want to get the old champion going just need to get it apart and see what's clinking in it. As far as the "bird cage" as iv always heard them called, aka heater fans or bathroom type fans go I just don't know how I would house them and all that good stuff. Any examples?

  5. It was a 2 speed dryer. High and low both were heat no option of no heat. My wife's you can do high and low or high and low with the cool witch don't get hot but this little pos didn't have that option so I'm figuring it burnt up. Back to square one. Maby I'll just try and rebuild that champion blower I have

At that rate you might as well just spend between $65.- ? On a good blower. Yeah you can get cheaper ones . One I got is $65. And has lasted my abuse, meaning I have a variable speed switch on it and it's not meant to have one.  But it has worked. That's been over a year. Now that's what I'd call abuse.

And twat is this magical blower that you have sir???

I'll echo what Frosty said, so nice to keep it in the family and do what you can to assure it stays there after you are done with  it.  If this stuff could only talk imagine the stories and history it could tell.  Now write down what you  know about it to date esp. from your dad, keep it for the next generation so much is lost from, "I'll talk with Dad tomorrow" or next week and then it's too late.  I learned the hard way, Twice!

Definitely staying in the family. That alone means alot more than what any of it is worth money wise.

Add bricks to fill the space between the bottom of the pan and the top of the brake drum. Cover the bricks with mud or ash and be happy while you build your second forge.

Going to grab a bunch of bricks today and gonna dig up some of this oklahoma red clay and top it off and see how that works..... gotta get a hair dryer or somthing tho the wife wasn't to happy to come out and see hers in the forge lol will post more pictures when that is done

  7. Ya I saw that this was a bit non effective, I mean it worked but was a pain. But for my first forge i think it was ok. Let's me hit some hot metal anyway. Yes that is a ball valve on the bottom. All of that was free so why not. If it clogs up I'll take it apart and clean it no biggy. I already have some other ideas rolling around to improve this or just build somthing better. But until then I'll take the advice given build my fire better and play with it until I can make something better

I was told once that any piece of tool metal with a hole through it was worth a buck.

Ya I understand that I don't mind paying or trading some steel for it. But I'm looking for the experience most of all.

Thanks RDS I will get in touch with him soon.

And ya Frosty I know this will only get me so far I'm just trying to make some contacts near me. And I will move out to more options now. Start calling SCABA tomorrow and figure out the connections there just figured I would start here

  9. So iv recently got some stuff together and I'm getting into blacksmithing I have some hammers that I can get started with. But after some reading on IFI iv decided I would like to get a cross pine hammer, but I don't wanna buy one... I have several hammer heads and I would like to take one or all of them to a smith "near me" and help him forge me some hammers. I think it would be a great learning process and an absolutely awsome experience. So please if your in oklahoma and have a spare day or two let me know I'll even pay for the "class" and bring the heads to use for the hammer or hammers I have 4 or 5 sledge type. This would be a great experience for me and hopefully you too.

  10. Ya I'm grateful to see that stuff was still here after all the scrap iron folks came down and hauled a bunch of stuff off. Like fn break roters. Only thing I'm missing now lol. And ya the name of the forge will be The Flying W with his old brand witch is what the name of his ranch was. But as promised here's the pictures of the blower. Any info you guys can give me on any of this equipment is much appreciated.

  11. So I've been itching to get into blacksmithing for a long time. But a recent lay off has given me the time to get bored and start searching. And thanks to my grandpa who is no longer with us I have almost everything I need. 2 anvils a couple tongs a post vice and a champion blower. Was kinda heart broken to hear how it sounds when turning it. So I'll have to look closer into  that. But here's some pictures. Let me know what you think. So excited!!!!
