  1. Hello to all and Thanks for the Warm Welcome at IFI. The moderator (or the automagic system) suggested that I introduce myself and, perhaps explain my presence. Glad to! I am not a metal worker. I am simply looking for sources of MODEST quantities of coal (Large Lumps, if possible, almost anywhere in Western Oregon. I want to do some modest experiments with buring lump coal as an alternative to wood, in with wild forests of Oregon where I live. In short, it has been 25+ years since I've seen any coal at all, let alone lumps. The only place that I've seen any coal (or coke) used, in recent years, in a few demonstration furnaces - perhaps at a fair or similar. I see that Dave M. has started a registry - and I will puruse that, of course. Coos Bay, Oregon seems to have a hefty supply of COAL, but I cannot find any evidence of active mines or sources, after about 1920. At this point, I would be happy with but a few hundred pounds and can easily haul it myself. The bigger the better, but screening under about 1" is not suitable for my purposes. Commercial 'Powdered Coals' and very small stuff, like the power companies use, is not what I;m looing for. Fist-Sized chunks would be ideal. Any and all ideas and suggestions are welcome. -More information is never a bad thing. The tone of most posts suggest that this a very friendly forum and that even novice questions are welcome. I appreiate that. Happy New Year to All, Craig cedarglen@peak.org
