I spent the first part of this week in North Carolina at Hoffman Blacksmithing learning how to make knives. It was a lot more work than I was expecting but I had a great time. Liam Hoffman makes some really nice knives and I am glad I was able to learn from him.
It is nessmuk inspired. The handle is Brazilian cherry scales with copper pins. The blade is 1095 hi-carbon steel etched and hand sanded to 1000 grit with a hamon.

Fire it up and let us know what you think. I am considering a Diamonback 2 burner Metalsmith.

Crobb, just across the river in indiana we have the Indiana Blacksmithing association. The local group is the Southern Indiana Meteorite Mashers. We usualy meet the last Saturday of the month in one of our members shops. Next meeting in November is at my shop in Floyds Knobs. This will be on the Friday after Thanksgiving, for the "Smoked Turkey Hammerin" where I provide sliced smoked turkey for the lunch. Ought to a real hoot as the last 3 have been:)
You would be most welcome.to attend. PM me for directions if you wish.
I neglected to look in on this thread but I would love to attend some time. I'll hit you up.

Heck yeah! Way to go! Congrats, that's half the Battle. Looks nice. Open invite still if you can find the time bud.
I am going to take you up on that. Thinks are a bit crazy right now with the holidays coming up so it may be after the new year.

Finished my introduction to blacksmith class at Kaviar Forge in Louisville last weekend and earlier today I picked up a Cliff Carroll 125lbs off of Craigslist. Should work well for banging on some metal on the weekends. Guy threw in the stand but I am going to build something more substantial. Next on the list is a good forge and vise and then I'll be in business.

That is a beauty. Going to have to build one of those myself.

That is beautiful. Hope to be able to do something like that one day.

Welcome from another Kentucky newbie.
Glad to know I am not alone. Where abouts are you located?

Thank you for the welcome and encouragement everyone.
Crobb, I live just down the road and there is an open invite to my forge every Sunday. That's usually the only day I can consistently make happen. Just let me know if you want to hit some metal sometime.
Sheltowee, thanks for the invite. After the class wraps up next month I will definitely take you up.

Hi everyone. My name is Chase and I live in the Louisville, Ky area. I am 31 and about as new as new gets to blacksmithing. After watching YouTube videos for months I started a begineers class at Kaviar Forge this past Saturday. Below is a picture of the result. It is simple and crude but I have a sense of pride about that thing that I can not really explain. I am definitely hooked and can't wait to learn more. I would love to connect with anyone in the area willing to share their time and wisdom and look forward to doing a lot of reading on the forum. Thanks.
