This may be stupid but have you checked your threads against Acme style threads ? They are old nearly square and flat bottomed. If so then you know what to hunt for they are definitely machinist territory.

Many metals have grain that soaks up impurities and can cause trouble. One of the reasons to sweat steel before painting it.

There is another alternative somewhat radical that I have heard of get a piece of graphite machined to the size and threads you need, then wirefeed weld around it in place. Next unscrew the graphite leaving the threads behind.

A ten pound anvil sounds like a jewelers bench Anvil. Hopefully it is not a Harbor Freight (HF) Anvil Shaped Object (ASO). Drop a hammer on it and check for rebound cast iron does not have much rebound and is the mark of an ASO.

Blacksmithing has always justified my scrounging garage saleing and fleamarketing addictions and there are many poor lost hammers looking for homes out there. Get as many as you can.

Complete bench grinders have an integral housing, if part goes it all goes. A motor arbor and belt hooked up to a motor on a hinge plate works well and the horsepower is what you want it to be. It also can be hooked up to a flap sander. disk sander or a lap! mine is 3/4 hp 7.5 amp 120V

Nickle Ni is an element like iron Fe, It is magnetic and a silver Grey. Nickle Silver AKA German silver is a Nickle copper alloy or a plating. it has NO silver in it. Welding or brazing a plated finish will ruin it. Good luck you might be in over your head with this job.

Most of the answers here are about applying something to the blade to protect it. I have been making scabbards that are self-oiling. Hollow out two pieces of wood ( I Like cedar ) so that the blade would rattle inside them then hot glue foam ( like old carpet padding ) to the insides. Then plane / band saw it level to the wood. Next hot glue felt to the inside edges of both pieces. And then to each other. Wrap the assembled scabbard with plastic packing tape. Lastly Sew a fabric / leather skin for it. And add oil to the insides. Results in a scabbard that is self oiling, protects the owner and is decorative. One of my swords has seen twenty years of service and looks like new. A neat thing is that you can hold it upside down and shake and it will not fall out. One failure was from the guy who left it on the tent floor during a cloudburst and it was 4 inches underwater.
