The old blacksmithing books talk of "cherry red"; unfortunately most folks nowadays think of Bing cherries at a dark red-black. Well Bings didn't exist a long time ago and the cherries they are referring to were a bright orange---like some pie cherries are still when fresh from the tree and not dyed in a can.
interesting...still learn something new every day!

Charles & Thomas gave you some pretty good info. I would like to 2nd what Thomas said about trying to find an experienced smith in your area. Someone experienced and in person can help you solve some of the issues you have. You need to get your metal much hotter...red is just not hot enough to move metal properly. Also, 4lb hammer is pretty heavy. If you are just starting out I would suggest using a lighter hammer until your hammer control is better. It's easy to hurt yourself with a hammer that's too heavy...just my 2 cents. Keep at it!

I love colonial anvils. Great find!

Interesting place for a pritchel hole and it looks awfully small. I would say that is definitely an after thought. Looks like the anvil is in great shape and a great size! Enjoy!

Bravo. I think it's awesome that you were able to immediately make needed tools and that Nestor could pick it up so quickly. Best of luck to Nestor!
