Try doing them cold using a swage block.I make ornamental grass holders,rings with a couple of legs welded on.I use 1/2'' round and hammer it cold,I find it is faster for me than doing hot.

I have a shoe repair for my day job and I also sell my metal and leatherwork in my downtown shop.My sign advertises shoe repair and blacksmith.When asked if I shoe horses I answer...No just people!...Sometimes it doesn't click right away but it is usually good for a laugh.

If you are selling items then you are a professional blacksmith not an amateur,so charge professional prices.

They are probably "wobbly pops", that would be my guess.

Go to the grocery store and get some 20 Muleteam borax from the laundry section,it is what I use the most.

I bought my Vaughan 2cwt double horn about 4yrs ago and it is a great anvil.I would buy another if I had to.I was lucky,the farrier supply that sold the anvil bought horseshoes from the same company as the anvil so it came over with their shipment.

Hi Josh.It sounds like you found Thak(Rob Martin)and if so the coal he sells will probably be the best you will ever use,I know it is for me.My friend and I have shared 2tons of it.I would still use it but the shipping is almost the price of the coal.I am lucky to have a coal mine 2hrs away:$140 a ton and $60 in gas to get it.They will load as much coal as your vehicle will handle.They loaded at least 3000lbs on my flatdeck(1 ton)and would have given me more.It is not anywhere near the quality of Thak's but it pumps the heat out and if you like big clinkers well!!!

What Dodge is talking about is called whiskering.Char the handle,lightly sand,then put on a finish.I like to use a beeswax,linseed oil and turpentine mixture when the handle is still warm from charring then rub in with a cloth.

I had a rat problem in my workshops and didn't want to use traps or poison because of my 3 dogs.I bought the electronic rodent deterents.It took about 2 weeks but they aren't in my shops anymore.The maker is Victor,they are cheap and plug in,no batteries.

If you use a BP hammer for a dimpler[that is what I call mine] make sure you soften the hammer face before using it.It is amazing where pieces of shrapnel can end up.

I have a letter and number stamp set,3/32 of an inch size,that I use for my first initial,last name and the year.I also use a hot stamp that I engraved an 'H'into.I have been doing this for a couple of years now thanks to my wifes constant reminder which is okay as I have been known to forget on occasion.I wish the old hand made tools I have were at least dated.I'm sure some of my hammers and tongs will be around in a hundred years for someone to say'Hey,I've got a Hansl hammer made in 2010!'I hope they will enjoy my tools as much as I do making them.

I usually temper them to blue and they seem to do the job.

a 5gal. bucket holds approx. 25lbs of coal,I hope it helps in your figuring.

Over the past week I have been able to use the machine a few times and it is a sweet belt grinder.Lots of power and very quiet running.I like a wheel to work on and the Ellis suits me to a 'T'.If you are looking for a belt grinder check out Ellis'.

I get mine from the wholesaler that sells me my shoe repair supplies,try someone in your area.I got some hits on Google under shoe repair supplies UK.Most of the loggers like want them on their boots as well as the caulks of course.

Thanks for the replies about Ellis' machines.My grinder is passing through Kent,Wash.[isn't tracking great],so I am hoping to pick up on Monday.After I use it I will post a review.

The leaf springs I get are 5160 and the coil springs 1095,that is what the shop I deal with told me.I hope this helps you out.

I just ordered the Ellis 6000 belt grinder from Ellis Mfg.in WI.I was wondering if anyone has one of their belt grinders or any of the other metal working pieces of equipment they manufacture.Any feedback would be appreciated,I only dealt with them over the phone but I like the way I was treated.

I have one of his 60lb swage blocks and I really like it.They are a well thought out designed tool and reasonably priced.It's alot easier to move around than my 240lber.
