  1. Im attempting to begin blacksmithing but i keep running into brick walls that i dont know how to get past. My biggest issue is the coal, i have asked tons of people and no one knew of a place to get it. Ive seen coal being sold on ksl but ive been told thats the wrong type. Here in utah there doesnt seem to be much blacksmithing activity so i need to find the closest area to get my coal and tools. If anyone knows of a close by coal source please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated!
  2. I have a bunch of old leaf springs with light rust on them and i plan to make knives and when i get more skilled make swords but what exactly is cold forging and what makes it dangerous? Also are old leaf springs a bad choice of metal for knives?
  3. I am a beginner in blacksmithing but my biggest problem is finding the coal to fuel my dusty forge. I dont know much about coal but ive heard you need to find some with a low sulfur content. Ive seen places that sell coal by the ton or 55 gal. barrels for 120 bucks but i dont know if its the right coal i need.
  4. Could corn be placed in a regular brake drum forge? i'd imagine it would fall through the vents before it gets heated
  5. I live in Utah and i have checked around for coal but is there a certain kind of coal i need?
  6. I am 17 and trying to get into blacksmithing but my biggest issue is whether to get a gas forge or a coal forge. I saw on Majesticforge.com a 5 burner LP gas forge for $600 and was wondering if this would be a good forge for knifesmithing/swordsmithing. But i have started the old brake drum forge project but the price of coal is too expensive. I just need some advice to get started on this wonderful hobby.
