  1. Looked at a few 2 X 72 belt grinders and it seems like sky is the limit !

I'm new to this and not going to buy a top of the line machine and I'm not going to build one [not knowing what I really need yet]

So I looked at things like Grizzly [i have their bandsaw and drill press -good for me] but read some not so flattering reviews .

The price is good but I could go to about $ 1000. for peace of mind and confidence in unit ,

right now I have a standard belt grinder -old craftsman 4 x 36 with wheel on side plus a small 1x30 ryobi sander wheel on side [removeable wheel ]

Should I start with these ?? also have a delta 6" grinder .. grinder can be buffer or cut off I guess .

I read the $ 50 knife book ,good read a bit confusing [for me] . He is quite creative and did a lot with little . I don't have his ingenuity or time to do builds .

Looking for some good solid basics to get started .I will keep reading sticky -new builder-it's GOOD.
    Thanks

  2. I've tried contacting thru email and phone last week no answer.

    Maybe they are vacationing ?

I'm trying to decide which size to go with economy one or 2 burner

or Knife maker 1 or 2 burner .. I'm starting out and would like to make some tools and knives .

It would be nice to eventually forge Damascus blades

  3. I'm going to need a base for my 138 #

saw some different base's built up 2x12's or framed box types

I'm going to use in my garage looking preserve concrete floor best as I can

any plans /ideas welcome its a small area so I need to incorporate tool holders as well.

not going to do stump - insect issues may arise

  4. I was bidding on a 70 # Hay-Budd on ebay my max was $ 210 and not happy about $3 /lb .
Lost the bid and felt like I let one get away ...Then I got realistic it was too $$ for too little .

Same day -today I called a fellow that I had bought a small bench anvil from on the chance he knew who might have a larger anvil .

He says he knows someone with a few .. I asked who ? Answer. he said ME!

This fellow lives a few blocks from me [after looking all over craigs list & ebay...it's in my back yard ] I go over and there she is PETER WRIGHT plainly marked .
To my novice eye this anvil looks in pretty good condition !

It weighed 138# on a scale ,his price was $ 280 .. just about $2 / lb . Now I know lots of you have paid $ 1 /lb or a bit more but I think I need to take him up on it .

Had a nice ring to it ,table was in nice shape ,no problews that I could see .

Question ? Should I look for something specific, any known trouble spots etc.
    Thanks I

  5. I'm a bit torn on this . I've seen a few DIY can forges & brick forges . I think one in particular [Paint can] Looks easy enough and seems to work well .Pretty cool making your own things

The you tube was well done .And it would be good for me to start small -shop size limits and time constraints

But on the other hand I've looked into some commercially made units .
They are well made but not sure how much better they willl work ...Chili-Tobasco & NCforge baby or mama . They would be reassuring to use as they are proven and have waranties and spare parts etc .
Help feel free to chime in .. I know there are many who faced the same dilemna

Yes money is an issue but so is saftey & sanity

  6. Hi I'm new here and just starting out [so please take it easy on me]

I've been seeing some makers like peter wright , Hay -budden , Fisher & Norris, Kohlswa ,trenton ,Emerson.... etc... Have commanded higher prices .

Is one maker supperior to others ? How would they rank in order of worth?

Also since I'm just starting would ther be a "good value" maker to look for

I'm in N.Y [Long Island] and I'm sure there must be some good resources witin a 100 mile radius

    Thanks for any help
