  1. Well I'm at it again! Got my 1095 from Texas Knife a few days ago and pretty much immediately jumped into a new knife. This knife is designed to be an all around good cutter. Thin tapered blade with a thin hard edge. I'm thinking I may do a simple wood core with a leather wrap for the handle? Anyway here it is so far:
  2. Andddd another update! Stained the handle. Mahogany wood, with a gunstock stain.
  3. Almost done with the Bowie! Handle is almost done, still need to finish sanding and stain. Then I'm going to go for a mirror finish on the blade. Work on a sheath. And call it a day
  4. Update: I've finished the blade, differential hardened. Going to temper tonight. Here are some updated pictures. Any advice would be great!
  5. Well I'm at it again! My grandfather was recently placed in an assisted living home because he no longer knows who he is. My dad and I have been slowly looking through the stuff in grandpa's garage and grabbing things we could use at the house. (With grandmother's permission of course) Well I came across a neat old butcher knife likely from the 50's or so. My grandpa used to love Bowie knives and owned several. So I decided to do sort of a stock removal Bowie using the old chopper. Here are a few pics of the work so far, sorry for not getting a before picture! Sort of forgot about it. Anyway this is more of a sentimental thing to me than anything else, I just thought he'd appreciate a nice Bowie being made out of a nice old piece like this.
  6. Thank you Vaughn! I was just sort of looking around my shop area and saw a broken pair of channel locks laying there. So I made use of them :)
  7. Thanks everyone @IronWolf: I live in Grants Pass, so about 56 miles from the CA border.
  8. Hey everyone, My name is Hunter, I'm from Oregon and I'm just getting into the art of bladesmithing. I've been working with metal for about a year now. Little things like learning to weld and bend...etc. Within the last few months I've turned to blacksmithing. I started out with a home built 50 gallon drum & steel wheel firebox charcoal forge, and a cheap harbor freight 50lb anvil. Since then I've upgraded to a single burner gas forge that I absolutely love, though I'm still stuck with my old battered anvil. I started just hammering pieces of metal whatever it was. Over about the last two months I've been working on various hammer strokes and skills I'm sure any blade smith ought to know. Such as drawing out a billet, hot cutting billets, tapering, tip hammering (Though I'm still horrible at that) and so on. Anywho! I finally finished my first start-to-finish knife this evening! I've made a few other (things) but I never finished a full knife. So here it is Simple skinner forged from an old pair of channel locks. Normalized then quenched in vegetable oil, tempered in the oven at 350* for 2 hours. Then sanded from 80-2500 grit sand-paper and steel wool.
