I just tested out if it rings or not and no it doesn't. So I guess it's cast iron. It's still in really nice shape though and the rebound is much better than my I-beam. I might use it for a while, hope it doesn't completely break, and then sell it once I can get a steel one.

Yeah thats what I've been coming across searching on google. I guess I'll go test the ring, really hope it isn't cast iron.

Oh sorry. The only damage it seems to have is a little rust on the top and it seems to have barely been used. The blue paint is very well intact. All the markings are still visible. It weighs around 60 or so pounds. As the title says it's marked Record No. A55, made in England. I'm mostly curious about the company. This is the first anvil I've bought so I really don't know much.

The other day I stopped off at a garage sale and while looking around noticed there was an anvil for sale. It was priced at $50 but the guy gave me a deal on it or $30. Does anyone on here really know anything about this anvil or about the company that made it? Also was the deal he gave me very good?

Oh yeah I knew all about how it's not good to burn galvanized pipes and all that so I made sure I bolted the flange part on the underside of the grill so it never got any direct fire on it. I figured that and the constant cool air blowing through it and that the heat from the fire was going up would make it pretty safe.

I'll look for that portland stuff. I'm going to scrap the grill part I'll keep the other parts like the stand it was on but I'm just going to look for a new thing to use.

Yeah I'm pretty certain that it's aluminum. The fire couldn't have been hot enough to melt steel for as long as I had it going. (which wasn't even long enough to get 1 decent heat)I thought about the clay idea and I really like it next one I'll probably try and use some. What is portland?

So I had built a converted bbq grill into a forge and tried it out for the first time today burning some charcoal and I got it going and turned the leaf blower on and it started getting nice and hot. After a little while though I looked on the ground under it and their was splattered melted steel. It turns out the bottom of the grill was melting away. Can anyone tell me what was wrong with my setup that made this happen? The first picture is of where the grill began melting. The second is my air intake/ ash disposal that ended up falling off because of the metal melting.

That guys bike grinding wheel looks awesome. Yeah I might just end up buying something cheap off of craigslist or at a garage sale. I'm sure my dad wouln't be very thrilled if I brought home an old bike and said I was going to make a grinding wheel.

I had an interesting idea a couple days ago. I don't have a belt sander or grinding wheel or anything like that but I figured I will probably need one. I was thinking of trying to do something cheaper than buying a new or used grinder and came up with the idea to use some dated technological ideas. Basically what it would be is a wheel with belt sander sandpaper or something like it on an upside down bicycle. It would all be modified so it could stand and be pretty sturdy and I would sit down and pedal to spin the wheel. Does this sound like a decent idea or would I just be better off buying something?

Dang I wish I could make it to that I'm going with my family to Chelan that week. It's an annual thing though right? Maybe I'll be able to make it next year.

Thanks I did. I think it would be wise to hold off joining until I've actually done some work and are in a better financial situation. I checked the calender for that conference and it's in Canada so I don't think I'll be going to that. There is a swap meet in Seattle though on July 23, I'll try going to that.

Well I've just started blacksmithing after months of studying videos on youtube. Ok just about started I still have a few things left to get and need to finish making my forge. I'm 18 just graduated high school and going into the material sciences next fall. I've realized I don't know a whole lot about blacksmithing or metallurgy in general so I figured this would be a great resource when I inevitably mess up and need help. I'm very excited to start though!
