I like the way you have the spikes held out away from the mounting board, but you may want to curve the bottom upwards so you can have a second hook. (Traditionally, the top one is for a hat and the bottom for the coat.)
I'm sure he'll love it.
My thoughts as well.
I'm not even sure you need the wood backing. And I don't think I like the brass screws. Maybe acorn nuts or black hex bolts perhaps?

Interesting. I might have to make a couple of those.

I'd have them swing outward or have them slide to the sides. You might need to adjust the posts, add wheels to the gates and add two new posts if you slide them, along with some landscaping.

If all goes according to plan, I and my brother in-law will be doing some demo work at the local Scottish fest. We hope to be able to set up in the clan area, and not the vendor area ( free vs 200$ booth space.) Because we are not in the vendor area, we can not sell, but the promoter suggested that we could put out a tip jar and say things like, "That hook is free, but a $10 tip would be nice...."
Not sure how I feel about that.
I would think that the vendors would be upset that you are using a gimmick to skirt the rules and make sales. -
Since there is a safety issue for people, I'd recommend that you don't do it halfway.
I'm not clear as to how the drain is set up. Is it going through the side of the embankment? Or is it vertical in the pond? Or is it a catch basin on top of the embankment?
A quick goggle search found a lot of 12" grate covers. If you want to make something, maybe use angle iron or square tube with flat stock and bolt it all together. Or cut it all out and pay someone to weld it up. -
It'd be nice if you had a credit so that people would know they are handmade instead of picked out of a catalog.

I like that you showed your mistake. Makes me feel like I'm not the only one. :)

Depending on what the symbol looks like, and from what I have seen descriptions of, I think I would be tempted to go with a round gong and repoussee the symbol on its face
Good luck with the project, it will be interesting to see pictures of the finished item
I think something like repoussee or similar would give you the best sound. I'd imagine they want a low deep tone and without the mass, you won't achieve that. The symbol is this:

... who then showed it to the code enforcement folks who then told him he would have to get a burning permit, ten days before each time he lighted the forge and $25 each time.
That's when you tell them to cite you and then have the judge slap the crap out of the city lawyer when it comes before him (if the city lawyer lets it go that far). -
It was interesting that the japanese work out of a tub in the floor.

The distribution box on my BIL's septic system was clogged with roots. We decided he needed a tool to get them out. Fifteen minutes later it's done. Needed handles for the new cover. Banged 'em out.
Probably saved him 500 dollars.

Does the knocker have a striker plate or just bang on the door?
