  7. rasp is folded in half. I forge the shape I want on the shank then open the bands up to perpendicular to the shank and weld the seam with a wire feed. I grind thi inside smooth so it will not damage your boots. I determine if I want solid or hanger buttons then form the bands around a jig I made. Hope this answers your question.

  8. Howdy Big John, I'm a shoer also in Reno, NV. I first cut the rasps at about 6" from the non-tanged end with a hot cutter and throw them into vermiculite to anneal them. I do cut them with an abrasive wheel (chop say) a band saw will work as well. The cut is 4 inches up the center from the opposite ind that was cut. The shank end is cut in like the letter M.   9. Regarding the indentation on the spur shank, purely done with files, no special hammer work or anything like that.
