  1. The tang is 4 inches long,1/4 inch in height and just a hair shy of 1/8 inch thich. if its small pieces I could make a layered handle. so I would need around 5 inches in total maybe a little extra. I am thinking of having it swell in the rear of the handle. As I said I would pay for the pieces and for the shipping.
  2. Hello all Iam just about done forging my 2nd knife and its a leap forward over my first knife. Its a hidden tang knife and I would like to use bone or horn for the handle. However paying $30 for the horn + shipping online is a bit much. Do any of you have perhaps a whitetail antler base lying around somewhere, that you would be willing to part with at a reasonable price ? I went shed hunting and found nothing....its a bit late for that anyway but I thought I would take a chance. I would even do a nice wood, but there the prices are even worse for a nice piece of exotic wood. Anyways thanks in advance.
  3. HI all Iam new to blacksmithing an dhave been using charcoal. I found a supply of coal and coke in 50 # bags from centuar forge. the coke is only slightly more expensive. It is my understanding that coke is formed from coal therefore I think that one would need more coal to make coke. example say 60 pounds of coal to make 50 pounds of coke. So would it not be more economical for me to just purchase coke fromt he get go. I have limited knowledge so if I make a mistake please let me know. It is my understanding that one needs coal to get upt o welding temps ? would coke not do the same ? I will be forging small to medium sized blades so I assume that coke is all that I need.

  6. Hey all WEll as many of you know I have been searching high and low for an anvil with no luck. I was wondering what you think the feasability is of buying a harbor freight Chinese ASO and having someone weld a 2 inch thick tool steel plate to the top of it. I have someone who will do the welding at no cost to me. He said and I am no expert so I am taking his word for it. That to get a good weld with the cast irona nd the tool steel plate he will heat up the cast iron before welding it. Wont this then ruin the hardness of the tool steel plate ? Anyway let me know what you guys think of going this route.
  7. Hello all I am thinking of buying this electric centrifugal fan as the air supply for my brake drum forge. Its relatively cheap and it moves 60 cfm. Please let me know if it is enough or if you have a better solution or supplier of these type of fans. http://www.globalindustrial.com/viewCart?ref=ac%2Fpd Thanks all
  8. Thanks all, I called him and told him $20 he informed me he sold it to an amateur blacksmith for $175, poor guy anyways thanks for the help. Iam on the hunt I have been calling at least 2 people a day for ads and spreading flyers etc.
  9. Hi all I realize this is a tall order the owner of teh anvil wants $200 I do think however that there is room for negotiating. He claims its 200 years old and he is a very old gentleman that had a lot of trouble getting this one pic to me. I cant see any marking sthe pics is not very clear. Apparently its a 93 pounder, to me it looks to be in bad shape and I should pass it up, what are your thoguhts. Anvil.pdf

  12. I have flyers all around town, I have spoken about an anvil to each and every person I meet. Even if I think there is no way they will know of who has an anvil. No local feed store but I did post a flyer and ask at the local elevator.
  13. Hello all I live in south central Minnesota and I am looking for an Anvil, I have the modest budget of $250 and was hoping perhaps someone on the forums is in my area with one for sale. Its a long shot but Ive been looking ofr one for a long time now. I thank you guys in advance for any help or advice you may give me.
  14. thank you all, I was given two leads by a member here and iam in contact with two people for two various anvils the one the ad says is 200 years old. I am very interested in that one. The ad only has a phone number with a request to contact after 9pm. I will call him tonight and ask him to mail me the pics, if it is not cracked I will buy it if the price is right. Hold thumbs for me lets see if i can get it.
  15. No I use a sledge hammer head in a bucket of concrete at the moment but the want for a real london pattern anvil is great hehehe.
  16. Just south of Mankato, mn. I am just frustrated maybe I should settle for a piece of RR track.
  17. Hello all Ive been lurking here a while I finally decided to sign up. Well I have been looking for an anvil for two years in Mn and Ia now. I have found a few but they had two problems. 1 they were very expensive usually in the $4 per pound range and 2 they were in very very bad shape some were even cracked. Well I do not know how much longer I will keep my search up Iam getting very frustrated. I do not want to purchase a ASO. I have read about 110 pound russian cast steel anvils that seemed pretty good not great but pretty good. The problem is I cant find any of them either. Guess Iam venting a bit. Oh well I did manage to get a champion 400 blower for $50 that was a good deal. Hopefully things will go my way soon. There are many estate and farm auctions comming up maybe my luck will change. Anyways the site is great and I find inspiration and a lot on information on it all the time.
