i spoke with a technical person at tjernlund fans. they go back to the era of coal heat and still have a vent that they use for solid fuel (wood) that he recommended. it is a radial bladed fan with the motor out of the airstream and is installed by cutting a section out of the piping.
also found a fan at rockford chimney supply website for use with solid fuel.
i dont remember what the btu heat output is for coal but i suspect these fans are (particularly the tjernlund) are robust enough for the high temps.
i will try to get a look-see at ron reils site to check his solution. -
has anyone have information about using a hi temp vent fan (simlar to a power venter for a furnace) to keep a chimney drawing when the chimney needs to be short? maybe 2-3 feet above the roof but at the lowest edge of the roof.
what temperature air is going thru a flue? the fire is obviously very hot but the air going up the chimney is mixing with alot of ambient room air.
am i howling at the moon with this line of thinking?
thanks -
Ideally the early bird gets the worm. I've brought home some really good deals from other blacksmiths, bringing back half a truckload from the conference in Kentucky for instance. That load even included a power hammer. True, some blacksmiths like to charge retail prices for their wares, but there are also some that like to share as well. I would be in the latter group. If I have something you need, chances are I would sell it for a reasonable price. If you would describe your ideal anvil or one that would suit your needs and your budget, I may have one. I've got four or five laying in the shop. Some are nicer than others. Most are in the 115-125lb range. I've got a sawyers anvil. Peter Wrights, Hay Budden, Mouseholes, post vices and other related equipment to sell at the conference. I've got a 426 lb Peter Wright that I may be willing to part with as well. Just let me know what you need and I can scout out the sale early.
I forgot...
what might you want for the big 426#PW? -

Thanks BigJohn,
i am looking for 150-200lb HB or PW, but if i can make a good deal on a 125 HB or PW, i may be interested. i still need lots of stuff. i have at present a leg vise and a blower that i found locally. the blower needs to be opened up and cleaned out and get some fresh lube.
all the local anvils i have seen thus far dont seem to have a flat spot on them.
obvious needs are tongs, hammers, and a forge/firepot.
central arkansas doesnt seem to be a hot spot for blacksmithing, but that is why i am posting here... -
If Dashand isn't interested in either anvil, I would not mind cutting a deal. Steve
would do you have to offer?
i am looking for something in the 150 to 200 lb range, but might go smaller or larger.... -
i can probably take a day off to go but want to know if the best tailgate sales occur early.. or will saturday be the best tailgate day?

i live close enough to the abana conference in memphis and wondered...
will there be vendors selling anvils and such there?
i would much rather buy an anvil that i can see and touch..
thanks -
about the possibility of welded repair..
do you think a new face plate has be added at some point? or something else entirely?
bottom line. would you pass on this one?
thanks -
no chance to do a tap test.. but anvil is not american. peter wright early 1900's (based on "solid wrought" written in circle and "england")
other than that little crack, it appears to be in very good condition. flat, good edges
thanks for the input.

I am looking at this anvil to purchase.
in the latest set of photos from the owner i noted an apparent delamination.
