Metal in rock or slag

I have recently been given a pail, of what I think is slag, mixed with some type of metal. It may well be copper. What I am trying to find out is how to separate the metal from what would be waste. If anyone has an idea on how to either hammer out or smelt out the metal or metals. please message me.
