How hot is Black Hot?

I had been pounding on this factory 2.5# hammer head for several heats making myself a diagonal peen hammer ... I had set it on the hanvil when it had lost its heat and was heating my hammer tongs to adjust them when I nocked the then black hammer head off the anvil - landed on the anvil stand and immediately caught it on fire... Thought it looked like a good example of how hot black iron can be.
