Inside of the black wooden box is the original water well that was dug out by Thomas Lincoln(Abe's father). It is about 28 ft deep and 3 1/2 ft across. It is still lined with the actual rocks that he put in by hand. The reason for the box?? Trash!! visitors thought that it would make a good trash recepticle. So now they have to look in a 2ft square hole on top.
