Hi from Bulgaria

Featured Replies

Hi folks. I'm a member of medieval living history society in Bulgaria. Since my first weapon of choice is the bow, I tried (and succeded in about 75%) to forge my own arrowheads. For heating source I used an old electric pepper-baking device, that I believe cannot be found outside Bulgaria. It easily heated the metal rods to yellow-hot. So the arrowheads started my interest in blacksmithing.
A friend ( his real name is Thor and he's blacksmith ;)) gave me the adress of this site and after reading and reading... here I am.
Now I'm looking for a forge design that suits me best (so far the washtub seems best) , and am interested on medieval arrowheads, knives and tools smithing.

Greetings
Alexander

Greetings!
Welcome to the site. My interest in medieval history led me to smithing as well. Maybe we can share ideas.

Sounds like the wash tub is in your future. Welcome to IFI :)

Hi Ruthven. Welcome to IFI. :) I have a mate who does iron age forging demos in the U.K. It looks pretty cool to see what can be done with just a hole in the ground & a lump of metal for an anvil. I look forward to seeing soe of your stuff.

Here are some of my first arrowheads. They've seen a lot of beating on rocks and wood, since I shoot in the woods. They looked a lot better when they were new.

I've also cold beaten this hemet replica (after a finding from 13-th c. helmet from Assenova fortress):

Well I'm not even a beginner yet, compared to you, but I'm learning fast.

you already appear to have a firm grasp of the basic concepts you need for what you are interested in :)
Arrowhead Tutorial

Here is a site for the forging f bodkin and boradhead arrowheads, maybe it will be of use to you

Nicely forged arrowheads and the helm is also well executed. Looks like you have a pretty good idea where you want to go and are headed in the right direction.

Thanks!
Well I'm interested in many things, arrowheads are just the beginning I hope. Still I lack some basic knowledge on coal forges and heat treatment, so I think that's what I'll start with. So, in my nearest future it's going to be a lot of reading. :)
