  1. I received word on another Anvil.
She said it was hard to read the engravings, but this is what she sent me.

There are some markings but the imprints may be as follows:
Horn to right -- BEST OR WEST
    SCR.... MAY BE SCRAP
3rd line --hard to read. (?R?????fades out)
    Horn to left -- 0-3-20 (104 pounds)
    The anvil weighs 104 lbs.

Here are the pics of this mystery Anvil.
Any idea of a fair price?

  2. I have a Fire Engine brake drum that weight close to 90lbs. It is about 18 inches in diameter and about a 10 inches deep. Is a large brake drum like this better; than one for a standard size vehicle.
My plans are to attach it to an old lawn mower deck and have a friend weld some sturdy legs for it.
    Any sugestions?

The guys that work on all our engines were realy cool about giving me the DRUM. They also offered me FREE REIGN in their srap metal piles.

  4. Thank's for the input! I am going to meet with the guy this thursday and take a look at it. He just sent me an e-mail stating that "there is a crack that runs along the side where the lettering and weight is. It doesn’t appear to be deep, like only millimeters deeps. Everything seems quite solid."
What would you think of this. Should that be a deal breaker? It kinda worrys me, but it is better than what I have, which is NOTHING... haha

  5. I am new to the whole smithing process and trying to gather a few decent tools to start out. I recently came across this anvil for $90. The owner says its a M&H Armitage Anvil that weighs right at 90lbs. It looks like someone has tried to clean it with a sander or something. Can this harm the anvil? Here a few pics. Hope you can help.
    Thanks.

  6. My name is Benjamin,
and I would like to extend a great thanks to the IFORGEIRON site for welcoming me. I am very new to the blacksmithing process and trying to gather the necessary tools to build my first forge. I have recently obtained about 20 heat resistant fireplace bricks and a Champion Forge Blower. So I'm on my way!!!
While I am building the forge, and trying to convince the future wifey that I am not just a "crazy fire-fighter" bringing the job home with me; I'm reading as much about metal working and welding as I can. If you have any suggestions for the newbie please let me know.
    Thanks again
