  1. Hello Thomas and thanks for your minor correction on units. I meant to use the proper English CWT and have seen the term hundredth weights used (112#) and quarter hundredth weight.

Regarding the pricing, last April a senior member offered the following as a guideline for an english Foster anvil--
"Prices in good using condition: $1 bragging/steal; $2 decent; $3 topping out; $3+ you should have let it go!"

I was hoping I could contribution to your community of blacksmithing artists with the availability of some historically important tools. Due to a death in my family our small fabrication shop is being cleared. Some of the gems I have managed to save from the scrap yard hype include the anvil and some sheet metal stakes and plates, rollers, edgers and seamers (et al). It was my perception you folks got as excited about these things as I did. I believe that we all can see that they have value and utility, and can be rather hard to find when you want them.

Mr Thomas, if you feel differently about my coming to your forum as I only "just want to sell some stuff" I do apologize as that was not my intent. I would have used ebay, but I am not convinced I would have found people as well informed as I can here.

I have been able to post image of the William Foster Anvil stamped 1855 2.0.13 on the IForgeIron gallery pages under my name.
    Enjoy!

  2. I have a nice Anvil becoming available next month. With the help of you guys I have come to believe this is a 1855 William Foster anvil weighing in at 2 stones and 13 pounds..... or 237, in very nice condition. It has a terrific ring across the face with the exception of the corner near the square hole.

The square hole has nice edges, the top is smooth and there are no chips or breakages. Of course there are markings along the sides, and what appear as a slightly blunted horn tip.

As I am new to this forum, I have asked, and continue to ask what is a reasonable price to expect for this anvil. ($2-$3 per pound seems to be reasonable less any historic or unique personality). I am working on getting pictures posted. I welcome all feedback and any possible interests. Located 100 miles north of Chicago.

I am also preparing pexto/niagara bead roller/seam roller equipment for availability in the near future.

  3. Greeting,
Perhaps you folks could help me identify a 238# anvil The only markings I have been able to find on the side of the anvil are a clear stamping of the number "2" on the left hand side (~center Height), a clear stamping of the number "13" on the right hand side (~center Height), and the letter "F" on the lower central side of the anvil. A little reading showed me that the celtic anvil would have three numbers and if the central number was gone, or a zero Two hundredth weights (112#) plus zero quarter hundredth weights plus 13 actually equal 238#. Does this make sense to any of you who would know better than I?????? I also have not been able to figure out what the "F" might mean. I have looked at the bottom and found nothing, and lightly wire brushed most of the surfaces. Should I be looking elsewhere??
Also, what would this anvil be worth in the midwest (US). Horn is ~11 inches, flat is almost 18 by ~4 5/8, and the base is 11X11 inches.

I'm quite new to this forum format, and am struggling with the details.
I think I was able to post some pictures on my gallery under gmann555@att.net, or also my name on the introductory myself pages entry of http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f23/allow-me-introduce-myself-11327/
