Hi I'm tex  from Cootamundra NSW.

Just getting into it . Keen to learn

I have collected, made or refurbished my tools using a hand turned charcoal forge and just finished my first gas forge. Other than that I have no idea even the nuances of hammering  are a mystery to me! So it is trial and error. 

My first go at a gas forge and arc welding! The dodgy table has been replaced with a sturdy metal trolley. 

Thanks guys. Sounds very promising! I am based in Cootamundra  which  is a small rural town about 2 hours  west of Canberra  or 4 hours south west of Sydney.  

I have my forge on a steel trolley with loops around outside for hammers and handled cutters etc.

 I have timber lengths  nailed into U shape like gutter with 25 mm steel mesh over open top.

Punches and drifts sit upright in spaces in mesh. Hardy tools sit post down in drilled 2x4

Sorry guys I am very new to this. I am from Australia and have just built my first Gas forge as good quality charcoal where I live is as rare as the proverbial. I have located and refurbished and refaced  some great old hammers etc as I would like to  reuse instead of buying new .

A block splitter here is a maul used for splitting firewood.  They come in a range of sizes   and I thought that they may be hard enough to reface the edge if I a careful with generated heat?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Can I make a straight peen from an old block splitter (are they hard enough) ?
