A few days ago I read a thread about portable forges. I want to ask gobae
about his belows construction or anyone else that might be able to help. I googled bellows but not much help there, unless I want to pay for plans.

Thanks Frosty. The brick idea is a good one but a tad bit small for knife blanks. But I did find the coffee can forge on another web site.

Speaking from my own experiance as a blackpowder shooter, if you decide to purchase a barrel I would suggest a Green Mountian rifled barrel. they are about the best you can get and they are around fifty bucks for starters. They are match grade.

Thanks for the info. I just want to try using a gas forge to see if I will like it. The propane soldering torch might be an option for me. I will doing small projects for a while
to gain some experiance first. decoritive work will be a future thing.

HI all. I read through the stickey about gas forges. I did not find the answer that I was looking for. My question is, could I use a propane torch that is used for melting snow and ice, as a heat source. And would this type of torch reach high enough temps for forging?
Any thoughts or advice will be helpful. Thanks

I have a few tats myself but that was before I got married. My wife said no to more tats
and I said If I want to get a tattoo then I'll darn well will ....think about it. But anyway, mcraigl, not sure what your real name is , under the anvil you could put "Forging our lives together." might work.

I also was an reenactor.mostly French and Indian War 1750's. Most places that we went to had blacksmith shop already. Unfortunatly these were not historically correct. Fort Ticonderoga in NY state and The Fort at NR4 in NH. I met Gobae at Chattham NY a few years ago. I was with the 78th Highlanders of Foot. Nice event.We wore red coats and great kilts. Gobae and the others in his group are a great bunch of folks.

been looking for someone out here about doing some more. I am also a newbie when it comes to blacksmithing. Right now all I have is an anvil,so I am part way there.

I also have an HB serial nr 21049,or it could be 21019 not sure.Any clues?

Thanks for the info about the NWBA. I am hoping that there are smiths in my area.
I plan to make my own woodcarving knives and gouges that better suite my style of carving. I plan to make plenty of mistakes and learn from them.
And I am not afraid to ask for help.

Hi all. New guy here. I have not been forging for very long. My good friend in NY state started teaching me, then my wife and I moved to Wa state. He taught me how to make a pair of tongs and I was hooked.
I bought an old anvil from a guy that I woodcarve with. It is a Hay Budden
weighs about 80 to 100 lbs. The serial nr looks like it could be 21019 or 21049, not sure and there are the nrs 8 5 bellow the Brooklyn NY.
The guy that I bought it from siad that his grandfather used it during the 20's and 30's. He thinks its over 100 yrs old.
The edges are pretty banged up but the face plate is in good shape.

My next project will be to build a forge but that can wait until warmer wearther.
