Strike.. I came across another hunk of rail line if you are interested. It's much the same as the last piece, I think a bit longer. If you are interested.

Time consuming, not sure of price, I get it from work, oops, but Denso Tape could be a long term idea. It works offshore in sea air conditions well. 

Hello. I have been offered a 167 lb Star anvil. Awaiting pictures, bit supposedly OK, one bit of edge missing, but good face, and told decent rebound. I don't know much about these. Is it worth pursuing. Looking at around $2.5/lb.  Thanks

Here are some pictures. The rail on the right is the one you can have. I thought it may have been trimmed, but no cut marks.

Strike,  I just obtained another piece of rail line. It is close to 3 ft. It has been trimmed so there is a square edge on it.It appears to be a bit lighter, Maybe for switches. Anyway.  there it is if you want it.

No worries there. Normally I would of cut it, but my 9" angle grinder pulled the pin a month or so ago. Only got a small one at the moment. Even a 7" would do it. Ley me know what you find out and we'll work something out. 

Strike, did you find anything to use. I just picked up a piece of rail line and plates. The line is over 2 foot, get a way to cut it and you can have half. I've got a few plates if one of those would be better for you. I am up Harper's Ferry way

thanks for the help on this. Appreciated. On a side point, a guy dropped off a bunch of railway spikes. Some are old, but others appear new. Does anyone know if the metallurgy will be the same. Just curious. Thanks 

Thanks for the reply. My terminology isn't always the best.  Not sure if I am doing right with the photos. I know as much about computers as I do on the working of a woman's mind.

The collar on the anvil is the dead/sluggish spot. It may be a bit bigger. I don't have this one set up for use, but I played around with different hammers today to see how it reacted. All in all pretty good. You could just notice the spot, the rebound just wasn't as sharp. If one didn't know about it, I guess it would be less. It appears to have seen use, which it should of. It will work.

Hello, I am new here and I hope you can help me with a question on an anvil I recently got. It is a peter wright , 125 lb. It was pretty rusty and dirty when I got it. 

I cleaned it up. It has about a 1/8 dip in the center of the face. The rebound felt OK with the hammers, but I decided to check with the steel ball. I was getting around 80% for the most part. 

But there is about a 2-3 inch square that Is less, around 50%. Why do you think this is, A manufacture flaw, someone running a gas ax in the spot a lot. It's not a show stopper, just wondered what others thought.
